La galatea è una farfalla di medie dimensioni la cui apertura alare varia dai 4,5 ai 6 centimetri. Di solito gli esemplari più grandi sono femmine. E' una farfalla che possiede un volo lento e planante. DESCRIZIONE Le ali hanno forma tondeggiante con bordatura inferiore irregolare. La pagina superiore è caratterizzata da ampie macchie biancastre su fondo nero che sembrano formare una scacchiera irregolare. I bordi sono neri delimitati da lunule bianco panna più marcate sulle ali posteriori e da una frangia marginale bianca. La pagina inferiore ha invece una colorazione di fondo bianco crema con alcune fasce grigio-nerastre non molto estese. Sull' ala posteriore sono inoltre presenti una serie di ocelli scuri cerchiati il cui numero varia a seconda del soggetto. La zona submarginale è caratterizzata da una fine bordatura zigzagante nera. I due sessi sono simili; generalmente la femmina possiede una colorazione di fondo tendente al giallastro. Il corpo è nero e peloso. CURIOSITA' In natura esistono alcune "varianti". Sono forme che presentano una variazione nella colorazione delle ali. C'è la forma magdalene che ha le ali anteriori quasi completamente nere, la forma leucomelas che è quasi completamente priva di pigmentazione e la forma procida che presenta aree nere più estese.
