Venne realizzata nel 1802 sul sito dell'antico cimitero dietro la cattedrale. Fino al 1870 ospitava il mercato del bestiame e nel corso dell'Ottocento intorno alla piazza furono costruiti gli edifici. La manica porticata sul lato nord venne realizzata nel 1833-34 e sotto i suoi portici si teneva il mercato dei bozzoli. La fontana al centro fu costruita tra il 1913 e il 1915. La precedente conformazione risaliva 1966: attorno alla fontana fu realizzata una pavimentazione con disegno a stella, attualmente (2015) è stata spostata e fatto un restyling dell'intera area pedonabile senza non poche polemiche da parte della cittadinanza.
