Il lago profondo di Portonovo è situato non molto lontano dal mare ed è un lago salmastro. Secondo alcune leggende il lago è collegato al mare da canali sotterranei che formerebbero dei vortici capaci di risucchiare chiunque vi nuoti. Il Lago Profondo è avvolto da un'inquietante leggenda, secondo la quale esiste un piccolo fiume, il Budello del Prondo, che collega il lago con Porto Recanati. Un'altra leggenda narra che una setta segreta utilizzasse il lago per gettarvi i cadaveri dei nobili che continuavano a praticare il rituale dello ius prima noctis. Probabilmente sono solo leggende, ma danno un tocco di fascino in più a questo laghetto.
