Grotta di San Michele in Monte Laureto.- La Grotta Santuario di San Michele del sesto secolo dopo Cristo, è un luogo bellissimo che trasmette una spiritualità profonda. Sorge su una collina distante circa tre chilometri dall'abitato di Putignano e dal 912 al 1045, ha ospitato inizialmente monaci culniacensi, a cui successero i frati Benedettini. In seguito, i Cavalieri di Malta nel 1506 affidarono il feudo di Putignano ai frati Carmelitani che provvidero a impreziosire di decorazioni il sito. Si tratta di una grotta fossilizzata. Questo è il termine geologico che viene dato a grotte che hanno visto fermo lo sviluppo delle stalattiti e stalagmiti. Discendendo i gradini, a sinistra si ammira una statua della Vergine con Bambino di fattura attribuibile alla bottega di Stefano da Putignano. Sempre allo scultore Stefano da Putignano sono attribuite le due edicole ai lati dell'altare, che custodiscono una statua policroma di Michele Arcangelo nell'una, nell'altra un affresco cinquecentesco che raffigura la Madonna con Bambino. L'altare centrale è decorato con un affresco del XV secolo che rappresenta scene della Crocifissione. La statua di San Michele, a sinistra è una delle opere di Stefano da Putignano. Un'altra sua opera "il presepe" è sita in Polignano ed è stata dichiarata monumento nazionale. Le poste italiane vi hanno anche dedicato un francobollo. La grotta è tra i luoghi di culto più suggestivi della zona: completamente scavata nella roccia, la cavità conserva un soffitto acuminato di stalattiti e stalagmiti e una luce particolare, che conferisce solennità e mistero all'ambiente. È veramente molto suggestivo di partecipare ad una Santa Messa domenicale Ho preferito uno scatto spostato verso dx in modo da valorizzare la parete destra. Mi sono spostato verso fine scalinata, in quanto al centro di essa è presente un passamano che disturbava l'immagine.
