E' la locomotiva come l'avrebbe raffigurata un uomo di fine ottocento: potente, inarrestabile, simbolo del mito del Progresso che avanza fra spaventevoli fumi e vapori; spirito del positivismo scientifico; svolta epocale.
Per quel “mostro … corrusco e fumido” sono scorsi fiumi di retorica, da Giosuè Carducci sino a Filippo Tommaso Marinetti e la “macchinolatria” futurista (l'associazione è suggerita dal contrasto molto spinto).
