Arriva l'ambizioso progetto: fare delle due città un'unica città per presentare la candidatura nella World Heritage List dell'Unesco. E altro che ponte sullo Stretto, ci pensa l'Unesco a congiungere le due sponde, a ricongiungere le mitologiche Scilla e Cariddi. 3,2 km (nel suo punto più stretto) di mare che potrebbero diventare parte di un'unica città, che per numero di abitanti diventerebbe la terza città del meridione. Sullo Stretto che divide il Mar Ionio a sud dal Mar Tirreno a nord si affacciano i comuni di Reggio Calabria, Villa San Giovanni e Scilla da un lato, e Messina dall'altro. L'area dello stretto è sempre stato un crocevia importante, un ponte di collegamento tra Europa del Nord e Mediterraneo, tra Europa dell'Est e dell'Ovest. “La stessa Europa, figlia del re dei Fenici Agenore, nacque su queste sponde mediterranee. Lo stretto è il regno del mito, hanno solcato le sue acque Ulisse, Enea, San Paolo” racconta ancora il professor Adornato. “Abbiamo bisogno di un'unica area, di una continuità territoriale”.
