The Natural Autumn Still Life sent on October 27, 2017 (3:23) by Timk2. 34 comments, 1258 views. [retina]

at 17mm, 1/60 f/4.5, ISO 200, hand held.

One of the reasons why I bought the Sigma 17-70mm Contemporary "macro" lens was for its capability to focus down to 22 cm at all settings, including as here, at 17mm. It is no macro lens but to be able to focus closely with a wide lens enables a sharp foreground and a wide pleasantly blurred background behind, to give a nice impression of the landscape the subject is within. These leaves had fallen onto a mossy old dead tree trunk and I was looking skyward up towards a tree behind. This close up, you have to remove the lenshood as you're almost touching the subject at this setting. Manually focused on the centre of the right hand leaf, I tried apertures between f2.8 to f7.1. Wider apertures than this one chosen (f4.5) had such small amount in focus, the image looked weaker - in my opinion - others might have chosen differently though. Sharpness this close and aperture is adequate rather than good, so some selective extra sharpening and contrast to give a boost. This fine lens is quite popular with Juza members and hopefully this image gives an idea on how versatile it can be. #autumn #bokeh

I enjoyed the backstory to the shot Tim. I can certainly see the area on the right leaf that is sharpest so I hope it is the same as the focus point you mentioned.
The color tones and contrast are pleasing and the background is reasonably blow out.
I'd still like to see this shot using F2.8 to enhance the subject/focus area isolation. I guess for myself that is the reason/benefit of having F2.8 and attempting a shot with a shallow DOF.
Lastly I would have downsized the shot for posting as the image is a bit of a mess in HD posted at 24MP. The general sharpness and micro contrast basically falls apart and the image noise is greatly exaggerated.
Even specialist macro lenses mounted on camera's with the highest resolution sensors would struggle to hold the image together posted at 24MP and the best one's I have seen on Juza even using that type of gear have been downsized. I think the image might have been better served posted at a max of about 3MP.
There must be a reason you posted at such a high resolution?
Cheers
Brian
