I've just taken a closer look at the unprocessed version and there does appear to be some evidence of noise in the sky even before processing, although it is more marked in the processed image. Thank you for your comment - I will look at my future images with a heightened awareness.
Thank you for taking the time to comment, Raf. Good question and I see that you are right but I don't know the answer. I imagine it is something to do with the way I processed the image but I no longer recall how that was done. It would be worth looking back at the original file and comparing.
