L'Egitto era abitato da molti coccodrilli, che avevano il loro habitat nel fiume Nilo e nei grandi canali ed era una minaccia per l'uomo. Il coccodrillo doveva pertanto essere placato per mezzo di offerte e di preghiere e i suoi attacchi scongiurati attraverso il culto che lo rendesse benevolo nei confronti dell'uomo. Non sorprende dunque che gli egiziani ne facessero una divinità padrona delle acque:Sobek; le acque stesse del Nilo, al quale si doveva la fertilità del terreno e la prosperità del paese, si diceva fossero originate dal sudore del dio-coccodrillo. Amenemhet III e altri faraoni, fecero costruire per lui edifici sacri e in questo periodo vennero composti in suo onore degli inni, nei quali Sobek, associato ad altre importanti divinità, divenne ricchissimo di attributi e di titoli. Grazie alla sua identificazione col dio sole Ra, nella forma Sobek-Ra, il dio coccodrillo venne poi ritenuto una divinità primordiale e creatrice, grazie alla quale viveva tutto l'Egitto. Il tempio di Komo-Ombo, è infatti dedicato al dio Sobek, il dio dalla testa di coccodrillo. In qualità di dio delle acque, si riteneva che Sobek svolgesse un ruolo fondamentale nelle vicende dell'irrigazione e nel controllo delle acque, fondamentali per l'economia egiziana. Se l'acqua abbondante-o quantomeno sufficiente- era considerata un suo dono, i periodi in cui essa era scarsa erano fatti risalire alla sua collera nei confronti degli uomini. Questa foto l'ho scattata in un villaggio nubiano, e il coccodrillo era di una famiglia che aveva creato un piccolo lago artificiale per ricreargli il suo habitat naturale.
