Mostra terminale dell'acquedotto Vergine - unico degli acquedotti antichi (19 a.C.) ininterrottamente in uso fino ai nostri giorni - è la più nota delle fontane romane e la più famosa nel mondo per la sua scenografica monumentalità. Documentata nel medioevo, la sua denominazione deriva da un toponimo in uso nella zona già dalla metà del XII secolo (regio Trivii), oppure dal triplice sbocco dell'acqua dell'originaria fontana. Nel 1640 per volontà di papa Urbano VIII (1622-1644), in concomitanza con l'ampliamento della piazza, Gian Lorenzo Bernini progetta una nuova fontana orientata come l'attuale, la cui costruzione si limita alla messa in opera di un basamento ad esedra con una vasca antistante, addossato agli edifici poi inglobati nel palazzo Poli. La realizzazione dell'attuale fontana di Trevi si deve a papa Clemente XII (1730-1740), che nel 1732 indice un concorso al quale partecipano i maggiori artisti dell'epoca. Il pontefice sceglie tra i progetti dell'architetto Nicola Salvi (1697-1751) quello più monumentale e "di minor pregiudizio per il retrostante palazzo" sulla cui facciata si inserisce l'intera mostra con uno studio meditato delle proporzioni e delle decorazioni. La fontana, articolata come un arco di trionfo, con una profonda nicchia, digrada verso l'ampio bacino con una larga scogliera, vivificata dalla rappresentazione scultorea di numerose piante e dallo scorrere spettacolare dell'acqua. Al centro domina la statua di Oceano alla guida del cocchio a forma di conchiglia, trainato dal cavallo iroso e dal cavallo placido, frenati da due tritoni. Rilievi che alludono alla storia dell'acquedotto e figure allegoriche collegate agli effetti benefici dell'acqua decorano, a vari livelli, il prospetto. Si fondono così magistralmente nell'opera del Salvi storia e natura intese in un rapporto dialettico, quale veniva affermato dal nascente illuminismo. La costruzione viene conclusa da Giuseppe Pannini (c.1720-c.1810) che modifica parzialmente la scogliera regolarizzando i bacini centrali. Dopo un intervento di restauro negli anni 1989-1991 (ad esso è seguita una manutenzione della parte centrale nel 1999), l'ultimo è avvenuto nel 2014 grazie a FENDI, concludendosi dopo diciassette mesi nel 2015, con inaugurazione il 3 novembre.
