Leopoldo Bellissimo fiore per una delle tante piante "addomesticate" dall'uomo. Fa sempre piacere vedere la forma selvatica di queste piante, che tanta rilevanza hanno avuto per l'uomo. Interessavano molto anche a Darwin, come d'altronde gli animali oggetto di allevamento e selezione artificiale, uno degli argomenti dell'"Origine delle specie" da cui ha preso spunto, tra gli altri, per la sua teoria dell'evoluzione. Per questa pianta la selezione prevalentemente operata ha privilegiato, come per altre, la produttività e la consistenza di semi e frutti d'interesse alimentare, per altre, come la rosa, la ricchezza dell'infiorescenza ed i colori.
