Il tempio è dedicato al bodhisattva Kannon (Avalokiteśvara, il bodhisattva della compassione). Questo tempio è uno dei più frequentati di Tokyo, sia dai locali che dai turisti. Di giorno, soprattutto nei giorni festivi è gremito di persone e l'atmosfera è quella della spiritualità ma anche della festa.La notte invece rimane un luogo mistico, silenzioso seppure in centro ad una megalopoli e i cortili rimangono aperti tutta la notte. L'anno scorso durante la mia prima visita in Giappone mi ero ripromessa di tornare proprio a Senso-ji di notte, portando con me il cavalletto e, dopo meno di un anno, ci sono riuscita.
