Della ricchezza della città tra i secoli XIII e XVI restano a testimonianza gli edifici religiosi, come la chiesa di S.Francesco, di origine gotica ma ricostruita e ristrutturata nel Quattrocento e quindi nel Settecento, e la chiesa di S.Antonio Abate, che presenta cicli di affreschi del XV secolo riportati all'originaria bellezza da un recente restauro. É da quest'ultima chiesa che il 17 gennaio inizia la festa di S.Antonio e nel sagrato convergono gli animali della zona con elaborate bardature per ricevere la benedizione del parroco. Ma la Santa più onorata a Cascia è Santa Rita, nata nella vicina Roccaporena e il cui corpo riposa nella grande Basilica a lei dedicata. La Basilica è una costruzione moderna in forme romaniche, consacrata nel 1948, ma la storia di S.Rita inizia nel 1381 quando viene al mondo con il nome di Margherita Lotti. La giovane avrebbe voluto entrare in convento, ma fu obbligata a sposarsi al rissoso Paolo Mancini, che per amore di Margherita e dei due gemelli nati da questa unione si fece più mite. Paolo fu però ucciso e Margherita riuscì a pacificare le famiglie che volevano vendetta. Neanche un anno dopo morirono anche i figli e Margherita, pur essendo vedova, venne ammessa nel monastero di Santa Maria Maddalena a Cascia. Qui visse per 40 anni e ricevette per miracolo una spina della corona di Cristo sulla fronte come segno di fede. A Roccaporena si possono visitare diversi luoghi legati a Santa Rita, come la Casa Natale, lo Scoglio dove si ritirava a pregare e l'Orto del Miracolo. In questo piccolo orto durante un freddo inverno, mentre Rita giaceva malata, maturarono due fichi e fiorì una rosa. E proprio le rose sono il simbolo delle feste dedicate a Santa Rita a maggio e a giugno. Da Cascia è possibile anche raggiungere il piccolo paese di Onelli a metà costa del Monte Meraviglia, dove nella chiesa di S.Sisto proprio quest'anno sono tornati alla luce degli antichi affreschi e da cui partono diversi sentieri per fare escursioni nei boschi di querce, faggi e carpini.
