La Chiesa dei Servi è stata edificata tra la fine del '300 (1372 – 1392) e gli inizi del '400 in onore della Madre di Dio, per volere di Fina de Buzzaccarini (una donna munifica e pia), moglie di Francesco il Vecchio da Carrara, sull'area dove sorgevano le case di Nicolò da Carrara, demolite per punirlo del tradimento ordito contro la Repubblica Veneta assieme a Cangrande della Scala nel 1358, episodio che aveva scatenato una guerra intestina e insanguinato la città. Morta Fina de Buzzaccarini, il figlio Francesco Novello nel 1392 cedette la chiesa ai Servi di Maria, un Ordine religioso nato a Firenze intorno al 1240 e approvato da papa Benedetto XI nel 1304; da allora viene chiamata “Santa Maria dei Servi”. Successivamente al periodo napoleonico divenuta parrocchia assunse il titolo di “Natività della Beata Vergine Maria ai Servi”. Tra la fine del 1300 e gli inizi del 1400 venne costruito presso la chiesa anche un convento di cui restano alcune tracce dopo gli abbattimenti degli anni '50-'60. La chiesa venne confiscata ai Servi di Maria all'arrivo di Napoleone che, con un decreto del 1807, li allontanò nonostante ne fossero i rettori. Venne restituita dallo stato italiano alla proprietà ecclesiastica in forma ufficiale solo nel 1963. Una lapide posta all'interno, sulla parete verso via Roma, ricorda l'evento (ecco l'immagine dell'iscrizione). Il vescovo Antonio Mattiazzo ha richiamato i Servi di Maria, riaffidando a loro chiesa e parrocchia il giorno 6 settembre 2014.
