Montmartre secondo la tradizione prese il nome dal Mont Martis, il monte di Marte, in quanto sulla collina in epoca romana era stato edificato un tempio in onore del dio; tuttora, oltre a questo tempio ne esisteva anche un altro dedicato al dio Mercurio. Secondo un'altra leggenda il nome sarebbe derivato da Mont du Martyre, perché in questo stesso luogo fu decapitato Saint Denis (S. Dionigi), primo vescovo di Parigi, intorno al 250 d.C. Un'altra tradizione popolare racconta che la decapitazione di Saint Denis non sia avvenuta a Montmartre, ma in un'altra zona della città, da dove poi il santo sarebbe giunto con la testa sotto il braccio fino a Montmartre Durante il periodo di Napoleone III, molti parigini si spinsero verso i confini della città e verso la collina di Montmartre. Dato che Montmartre era al di fuori dei confini della città, libera dalle tasse di Parigi e con una produzione di vino locale (tuttora conserva le uniche vigne di Parigi), divenne in breve una zona popolare per il divertimento. L'area si sviluppò come il centro dell'intrattenimento decadente alla fine del XIX secolo e all'inizio del XX, rappresentato dai cabaret del Moulin Rouge e de Le Chat noir; in questo stesso periodo Montmartre - a causa della sua economicità - fu il luogo prediletto da vari pittori, tra cui Pissarro, Toulouse-Lautrec, Steinlen, Van Gogh, Modigliani, Picasso e Maurice Utrillo, l'unico che vi era anche nato.
