Appartiene alla famiglia della Boraginaceae e viene comunemente chiamata Sugamiele o Buglossa comune o Lingua di bue in relazione al luogo. E' diffusa in tutta l'Italia settentrionale sino alla quota di circa 1.500 m. slm. Il genere deriva il suo nome dalla parola greca “ankousa”, che significa “belletto”. Nei tempi antichi infatti, si estraeva dalla radice di Anchusa officinalis L., una tintura rossa che veniva usata nella preparazione dei belletti coi quali le donne greche e romane si truccavano il viso. Il nome specifico deriva dall'utilizzo officinale di tale specie. L'utilizzo di Anchusa officinalis L. per usi officinali, culinari e cosmetici è antichissimo. E' dotata di proprietà diuretiche, depurative, emollienti e sudorifere, aiuta inoltre a combattere le infiammazioni intestinali. Se ne usano le foglie e le sommità fiorite. Contiene cinoglossina, mucillagine, tannino, nitrato di potassio. Pur in presenza di diversi composti attivi attualmente è poco usata nel campo erboristico, viene preferita la più conosciuta borragine che gode delle medesime proprietà. Le foglie si possono mangiare lessate e condite con olio e limone. Sono buone anche ripassate in padella con olio, aglio e peperoncino. Gli steli lessati accompagnano ottimamente le uova sode. La radice, produce una tintura rossa, che veniva usata come colorante sia per uso cosmetico che alimentare. Anchusa officinalis L. era originariamente distribuita dal bacino pannonico all'Anatolia. L'area di distribuzione si è allargata ad occidente e a settentrione estendendosi a tutto il bacino del Mediterraneo per antiche colture come pianta officinale e alimentare ed a seguito del pascolo ovino. Scatto effettuato nel Luglio 2016 a Pozza di Fassa (Dolomiti).
