Il Pino Mugo è comunemente chiamato anche Barancio. Il legno giallo rossastro o rosso bruno, di media durezza e assai elastico, veniva impiegato per ricavare utensili da cucina e per cerchiare le botti. Le piccole dimensioni dei tronchi, ne permettono l'utilizzo solo per piccoli lavori o quale combustibile. Il legno delle radici, e quello resinoso, dei rami veniva usato in passato per fare fiaccole. Come altre Pinaceae anche il Pino mugo veniva utilizzato per la produzione di resina con la quale si preparavano linimenti utili nelle forme reumatiche e nelle affezioni polmonari. Venivano praticati, alla base dei fusti, tagli rettangolari e profondi fino all'alburno qui veniva applicato un raccoglitore concavo che conduceva l'essudazione resinosa in una ciotola. Una volta la settimana si rinnovava il taglio operazione condotta per tutto il periodo autunnale e che permetteva di raccogliere quantità notevoli di resina. La ferita del tronco successivamente si cicatrizzava formando un callo nella corteccia. Questa pratica è stata abbandonata, ora si pratica la distillazione degli aghi e dei piccoli rami, ricavandone il "mugolio", olio essenziale odoroso, utilizzato come balsamico, antinfiammatorio, espettorante, fluidificante della secrezione bronchiale, sedativo della tosse e degli eccessi di asma bronchiale. L'azione antisettica ed antinfiammatoria si estende anche all'apparato urinario,favorendo inoltre un effetto diuretico. Per uso esterno è buon antisettico della cute e delle mucose della bocca e della gola mediante inalazioni, utilizzato anche per curare contusioni, stiramenti, storte, strappi muscolari e infiammazioni. In profumeria viene usato per preparare sali da bagno e per profumare detergenti Ponendo a macerare al sole: grappa gemme di Pino mugo e zucchero per 6 settimane , agitando almeno una volta al giorno, infine filtrando con molta cura, si otterrà una grappa dal sapore particolare. È utilizzato come ornamentale, per l'aspetto aggraziato.
