La Chiesa di Santa Maria della Vita fu fondata nella seconda metà del sec. XIII dalla Confraternita dei Battuti o Flagellati, il cui nome deriva dall'abitudine dei confratelli di flagellare il proprio corpo a scopo penitenziale. La Confraternita è una delle prime sorte in Italia sull'onda del movimento dei Disciplinati fiorito nel 1260 a Perugia per impulso di Raniero Fasani e si caratterizza inoltre per un'intensa attività assistenziale che la porta nel 1287 ad erigere un complesso ospedaliero ed una chiesa a cui venne dato il nome di Santa Maria della Vita.
