Istituito nel marzo del 1990, il Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti d'Ampezzo si estende su un'area di 11.200 ettari a nord del centro abitato di Cortina d'Ampezzo, al confine del Veneto con l'Alto Adige. In data 26 Giugno 2009, l'UNESCO ha inserito le montagne calcaree situate nel nordest d'Italia nel prestigioso elenco mondiale del Patrimonio Naturale dell'Umanità per la loro monumentale bellezza. Con questo atto, le Nazioni Unite hanno riconosciuto ufficialmente tramite la propria organizzazione per I'educazione, la scienza, la cultura, le peculiarità e I'unicità delle Dolomiti. Adesso quindi anche le montagne della Regina delle Dolomiti sono riconosciute a ragione fra le montagne più belle della Terra.
