Certo che aspettare 16 milioni di anni per vedere qualcosa sembra veramente un tempo infinito, questo è esattamente quanto è servito aspettare per fare in modo che i fotoni raggiungessero il telescopio. A 16 milioni di anni luce dalla Terra, nella costellazione dei Cani da Caccia, una galassia si sta allontanando a 308 km/s da noi. La luce di questa galassia è partita 16 milioni di anni fa ed, in questo momento, la galassia ha già percorso diversi milioni di km in più. Questi fotoni hanno viaggiato alla velocità della luce (300'000 km/s) per 16 milioni di anni per fare in modo di poterli vedere e creare quest'immagine. M94, il suo nome, è una galassia a spirale barrata (come la nostra Via Lattea) particolare perchè presenta due zone ben distinte, una anello interno, di circa 30'000 anni luce di diametro ed uno esterno, di circa 45'000 anni luce di diametro. Nell'anello interno vi sono stelle in costante formazione mentre, quello esterno, contiente circa il 23% della massa della galassia e contribuisce al 10% alla formazione di nuove stelle, questo anello esterno però forma stelle molto più rapidamente di quello interno in quanto è più efficiente. Questo anello, dopo attenti studi, si è scoperto essersi creato dalla distorsione dell'anello interno. La galassia si presenta "di faccia" a noi per cui possiamo notare alcune delle sue nebulose rossastre e blu al suo interno. La foto è una somma di 40 ore di pose fatte nel mese di Aprile 2024.
