La Cavalcata Sarda pare abbia origini settecentesche. Il Consiglio comunale di Sassari, sul finire della dominazione spagnola, deliberò di "far cavalcata" in omaggio al Re Filippo V° di Spagna. Alla manifestazione partecipò tutta la nobiltà sassarese, orgogliosa di mettere in mostra i propri costumi. La manifestazione che possiamo ammirare oggi invece nasce nel 1899, in occasione della visita a Sassari dell'allora Re d'Italia Umberto I° accompagnato dalla moglie, la Regina Margherita. Fu un tributo al Re da parte di tutto il popolo sardo. Con il passare del tempo l'usanza si è consolidata diventando una sfilata folkloristica dei costumi tradizionali della Sardegna, fino ad assumere cadenza annuale ed a diventare uno dei più noti e apprezzati appuntamenti culturali e turistici dell'Isola. Nel 1982 se ne organizzarono addirittura due, una delle quali in onore del Presidente Pertini. La Cavalcata è una delle tre principali feste della Sardegna in cui si riuniscono i gruppi folkloristici di tutta l'Isola con la differenza, rispetto alle altre due (la Sagra del Redentore a Nuoro e la Festa di Sant'Efisio a Cagliari) che è l'unica ad avere un carattere squisitamente laico e non ancorato a motivazioni e origini di tipo religioso.
