Pros: Blur, colors, plane separation, f1.2

Cons: I can no longer use other lenses

Opinion: Lens that I loved from the first shot, I really had trouble taking it off the camera. Bokeh and unique colors. On Eos R it was very sharp already at f1.2, on R5 it suffered a little bit from the pixels but perfect already from f2.0. The speed of the af was not a problem, especially in portraiture even in difficult light. The only real drawback is the focus ring, without end of stroke and with a bit of play, from a sense of error.

Pros: Brightness, bokeh, colors, sharpness*

Cons: Speed, sharpness*, hood

Opinion: Pure love optics, a blurred and WOW colors, maybe the RF 1.2 can surpass it. In addition, it is bright and therefore allows you to photograph in extremely dark conditions. The sharpness is very good but not at the levels of 1.4 L IS and Sigma 1.4 Art (if you choose it, you certainly do not think about this). It weighs like any bright 85mm. The hood is slightly large. The dimensions are normal. I wouldn't use it to chase pheasants, that's it!

Pros: Lens to be kept and handed down to posterity

Cons: Nothing

Opinion: Lens suitable for those who have something beating in their chest, it is wonderfully imperfect, it is like a Picasso, a Van Gogh, lives on its own "light". If you want to reduce photography to a science then don't buy it, but if you believe that photography is an art..... the Big One is the Holy Grail. Take the first portrait and it will be eternal love

Pros: rendered, knows how to be sharp and poetic, is a lens to have ... small size (no joke)

Cons: Construction under tone for an L, lensing autofocus... heavy, but there is worse

Opinion: The surrender is magical, nothing to say... I had the sigma 1.4 and there is no comparison. The blur is beautiful and even at closed apertures it remains very nice, in particular I noticed that it is more pushed in this at f2.8 than in the full-aperture sigma (and the sigma has never disappointed me, indeed!). The colors returned are beautiful, the rendering in fantastic backlight, the sharpness is excellent even at full aperture and even in the most peripheral areas, closing increases the contrast, a little sharpness (which becomes perfect) and the chromatic aberrations disappear, which in any case are not annoying. Among the pros I also put the size, it is in fact quite short even if cicciotto. Compared to the new RF it is shorter even adding the adapter! The autofous is slow, but precise; the weight is considerable, but not dramatic... The construction is what leaves me a little bitter, the focus ring has a bit of play, not being tropicalized it is easy to find a few grains of dust between the lenses (although they will never be a problem in the photos), the front element moves during focus. The part of the barrel on the bayonet side is covered with rubber, but in a short time (it does not always seem ...) this coating begins to "melt", and will be sticky. To solve this problem there are various solutions, the cheapest (zero cost) is to remove the coating gently and the plastic core will remain, otherwise you order a Chinese spare part without rubber, because with the original spare part the problem will recur.

Pros: Blurred, cut, cream

Cons: Objectively slow AF

Opinion: It has been said and read practically everything about this lens. My opinion is that, like all lenses, this one in particular should be used for what was conceived: posed portrait. Of course it can also be used in other areas, but the best provides it in this context. My specimen has no particular problems with TA, on the contrary, with still subjects you get practically sharp images already at f / 1.2. Then, closing slightly you can afford to be even sufficiently quiet. The PDC is minimal (obvious), high-resolution files do not forgive but, as I said, with static subjects it is the maximum. Someone considers it heavy: of course, after hours of use maybe with a heavy FF and with BG the weight is felt, but nothing terrible; I also use medium-format lenses with much heavier lenses and I do not find it as a deterrent ... . About the price, well, the beautiful things are paid (and in any case in the used you find yourself at very affordable figures for the type of performance you are looking for). Every now and then I also use it with APSC without regretting an FF at all. Lens definitely recommended with any machine.

Pros: character , sharpness , bokeh

Cons: af , flare .

Opinion: suggestive lens that enjoys legendary fame, even today only in the canon house with the rf you have something similar, similar because the new lenses are all apodized and filter too much light making it enter less in the sensor, ccosa follows? that an f 1.2 will be slightly more diaphragmed . The lens has a poetic ability to tell the shot and communicates whenever it is used. alas I have the tendency to isolate the subject more and I love madly the 135 mm L, cmq I recommend it to all portraitists looking for the wow effect at TA, even if at closed apertures it becomes very interesting in the studio.

Pros: Supreme quality.

Cons: Weight and footprint.

Opinion: Used for a year in a few shottings. I'm not like fixed optics, I get tight and I'm not one to spend my days in the studio, but with this 85mm I have a lot of fun. Unfortunately it needs special conditions to be used, and it is right that it should be. Its construction marked an era; envied by all, quality close to the Zeiss and a pleasant three-dimensionality in portraits; but too sectoral for its use.

Pros: excellent image quality even at full aperture, blurred with quality.

Cons: weight, autofocus speed, cost but i don't think real flaws are physiological

Opinion: There are 85 mm faster, more incisive, more something else.... but what is the use of too much sharpness when the canon has enough of 1.2, even the stabilizer is useful but I have never felt the need on this lens, moreover if you make portraits at least 1/60 it is better if you put it since people move :-) there are discussions about what 1.2 is needed compared to 1.4. I did repeated tests to test it lunge before using it for portraits, and not even those who lend it to me have ever noticed anything, but between 1.2 and 1.4 you do not see differences in real photos on the depth of field and blurred in the classic sense, but there is one thing that changes and is immediately seen in certain types of photos, so it is not the same to put 1,2 or 1.4 and it is not better one or the other, it depends on the type of photo ... for me it is a lens that deserves all my esteem.

Pros: Everything: especially blurry, sharpness

Cons: As long as there are any?

Opinion: Reading the reviews I decided to give him a nick name too: Jumbo, I don't know why but it reminds me of the fuselage of the most famous wide body in the world. The lens is of very solid construction, beautiful to hold in your hand, but above all to use. It is magical I find it spectacular for close-ups to enhance one detail of the subject compared to another I would always like to be making portraits with this toy.

Pros: Three-dimensionality, Planes Detachment, Colors, Sharpness, Blurry

Cons: Weight and foot-and-mouth

Opinion: Magic lens with all its flaws if they can be considered such. I mounted this lens first on a modest 650D, but recently I use it on a worthy machine such as the Canon Eos R and I must say that it literally changes, acquires its full potential on the R, three-dimensional, sharpness already at TA, I must say that the AF is also faster than the old machine, although it is not miraculous in certain situations especially in the backlight. For portraits it is a must in my opinion to have, obviously very static portraits where as mentioned the AF does not go crazy and also because its weight feels it at the end of the shooting session, but my initial impressions and now with the R are really "first of the class" without a doubt any. Top! Rating 9.5

Pros: It's just unique... Toughness, openness, detail already in TA, three-dimensionality...

Cons: Weight, af slow, price, is not tropicalized

Opinion: I used Franco (I had given him a name...) for three years. I switched to 1.4 L for stabilization and autofocus... It's a mythical lens and that's why you have to know it. The autofocus is slow and you can't say no but otherwise it's fantastic... If you let the light into the frame, it does real magic. I used it with great surprise even in the night street and can find the light where it is not there. On the 5dsr the micromox is very obvious and for this I had to shoot with times of at least 1/125. My heart cried when I changed it with 1.4... It will remain a good memory forever.

Pros: All

Cons: Nothing

Opinion: I realize I've written so many 85mm reviews but never about the Big One, the most fitting nickname that camera enthusiasts have ever coined. I had so many 85mm: Canon 1.8, Canon 1.4, Sigma Art 1.4, Tamron 1.8 to mention the last. All great and it's true but no one even resembles the Big One that remains the 85mm reference for lovers of this focal. Peculiarity, merits, defects, pseudodefects are now archnoti and I am not here to repeat them (great review of Roby that precedes this) but a portrait made with this lens is unmistakable and if you love certain atmospheres you will never be satisfied with anyone else. For those who want only as much sharpness as possible by passing over everything else (which is a lot) there are around great products that cost even much less. Vote 10 and praise.

Pros: Opening, Three-Dimensionality, Airiness, Off-Plan, Colours, Sharpness, solid Construction, Gradual and progressive Blur, complexion Rendition, L-Series

Cons: Maybe AF a little slow (but nothing dramatic), tendency to suck dust inside

Opinion: Magic Lens, without a doubt the best mediotele I have ever used and not only in the house Canon. I Have recently held the "Big One", nickname that I have been able to confirm as soon as I took in my hands this "specimen". Very large and powerful, with a very special build quality, being so bright needs "space" to accommodate the large front lens and the entire optical group: 1Kg abundant glass and steel.... Amazing and in my opinion the unique design and very appealing. Lens of the 2006, then not too "young" from the optical scheme inherited from the first series (dated 1989......). My first concern was the AF, which many have seen as slow.... I state that I had the 85 1.8 USM and all this slowness I did not see it compared to the less bright brother. It is perhaps a bit ' slow when you switch from subjects on the first floor compared to subjects "far", there maybe it is a slow thread to find the fire, but close up is fast enough, so you need to take your hand. Strong Piece of this lens is definitely the three-dimensional yield that gives, with the subjects that seem to literally "pierce" the photo and the background that slowly, progressively, seems to fade in the fog.... Wonderful indeed. I Think in so many years of photography, maybe only the Canon 135 L is approaching him... But as 85mm never saw anything like it. It matches with great naturalness to the performance of the FF sensors (I use it on 5D4 and 5D3 and it is excellent) giving to the images that stamp and that paste that reminds the film photos.... I read that this lens shares the optical pattern of the previous one, which in turn had been inherited from the Leica 85.... In fact, the airy, pastel colours, the artistic and dreamlike style of the blurred are sublime and not comparable with ANY of the modern lenses Hypersharp, Hypercorrect and Anonymous... About sharpness, however, is also high to 1.2, reaching from F2 in then impressive peaks. Having had the 1.8 I affirm with certainty that at the maximum openings is sharper this of the little brother, which is beautiful, fast, practical and sharp.... But the "big one" is something else... Try to believe. Reportage, weddings, portraiture are his fields of choice, and I add that serves so much, so much practice to know how best to manage. Compared to 135 I find it more comfortable the focal (85mm for me are the Perfection for portraits), very sharp both but more rosy the complexion of 85 (a bit ' more natural in my opinion).... For the rest are the 2 lenses that in a substantial "technical" kit can not miss. I reserve to try it in depth and to squeeze it to the fullest but my initial impressions are from "first of the class" undoubtedly some. Top!

Pros: Blurred, color rendition, lens character

Cons: Slow AF, delicate construction, no tropicalization.

Opinion: The optics that made legend. He always intrigued me and has always been in my most dirtiest desires then finally I managed to find it used at an honest price. What about... taken in hand you see that has many years on the shoulders, construction a little ' delicate, thin and raw plastics, front element that comes out. Then the mountains and you take two shots then the story changes. You immediately realize why he made a legend. A TA has a blurred never seen before, a deadlift of plans and an absurd three-dimensionality and finally a color rendition to make the various Sigma art Tamron and Nikon Pale. It is not true that at 1.2 has a yield too soft, already at 1.2 has all the resolution and micro-contrast that serves. If you close a couple of stops it becomes a blade. Pity only for the AF that although very precise is really but really slow. Is this a problem? Lol It is a portrait lens, to be used calmly. If your use is a handyman be absolutely away!

Pros: Aperture 1.2, unique Bokeh

Cons: Heavy, large, delicate, slow AF with little light, crisp to 1.2

Opinion: I do portraits, and this is my favorite lens, with all its flaws. By day from the best of SE, since the AF is more decided and reliable (slow AF due to the weight of the lenses). Without a good light point, it hardly moves. I use it for reportage and portraits. I'm curious to compare it with the new 1.4 but I'm afraid to regret to give it away for the new specimen, being a very unique lens.

Pros: Definitive for portraits

Cons: Nothing except the construction we say "delicate". Nothing to see with the next version 1.4 that compares is a SPACCANOCI

Opinion: There is no way that this lens can be "outdated". Masterful for portraits thanks to its opening and its minimal optical pattern. A lens that makes its character and its ability to faithfully restore the image to its winning weapons. A spectacular micro-contrast, a non-excessive sharpness that allows pleasant tonal passages impossible with much more correct lenses such as a Sigma Art. This lens has 8 elements, the Sigma 85mm has 14. While a higher number of elements could correct aberrations, on the other hand it destroys the microcontrast. Personally I think this one of the best portrait lenses ever created, and that can hardly be replaced in the future, given the tendency of nikon\\canon\\sony to produce lenses super sharp but not very artistic. But to emphasize how the ergonomic side is really outdated, and the general construction is not much. The specimens I had skinned, and the last lens placed on the bayonet was more time that I disassembled to clean it than the one I used. Irony aside, it is a very delicate lens and to be cured, an error while you mount it and do damage by salary. In fact the lens placed directly on the bayonet is in my opinion a bad engineering choice and unjustifiable, which will be the source of a few anxieties and worries.

Pros: All

Cons: Nothing

Opinion: Now I own it for 1 year and a half, in my opinion when you use it to 1.2, it drags you on another planet, and you realize that there is no better lens than this, not even the 85 Canon 1.4, which I tried but for me does not have the same magic as this 85 1.2 series 2. Lo with the 5d III and manages to give me colors, contrasts, bokeh from fear, I miss another sixty-six characters to finish this my comment, but only with one can define it: magicooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Pros: Consistency!

Cons: Addictive

Opinion: I would like to write about things that are repeating many opinions that I have read below. I just Add... "Probably the best photographic optics ever built", for my liking is meant!! Ideal for portraits, but with a little ' mobility of the photographer can broaden his "attitudes". After this there is nothing else, must be treated with care, requires respect and against you will give satisfaction for the eyes on beautiful things that others will appreciate with admiration. Love at First sight!!

Pros: Plan out, Blur, color

Cons: Slowness AF but absolutely irrelevant as a defect seen the use

Opinion: This is not a handyman and not even a 85, you come to him because you want him, for his unmistakable surrender, maybe after the right experiences. Some time ago there were those who changed brands to have this, or did not change to not lose it and if you try understand the reason!!! Now I see the new Sony with adapter and this jewel attached. TOP LENS for Portrait

Pros: Lens quality, blurred

Cons: Weight, fragility, autofocus apparatus

Opinion: Awesome. It makes me want to photograph. The blur is wonderful and the brightness impressive.rnI had some initial difficulty in "understanding" the lens, perhaps due to the fact that I had never possessed a 85mm in a fixed focal length lens. The discomfort, however, did not last long ... rnUnico neo is the fragility of the autofocus apparatus. Perhaps this problem depends on the fact that the excursion of the focusing ring is very wide and consequently the mechanism also suffers in solidity.

Pros: without doubt, blurred it

Cons: slowness af

Opinion: Buying new to 1462 € on Amazon thanks to the repayment Canon has flanked the baseball and the biancone.Subito I thought it was a superposition but then trying it I realized it is a unique lens of its kind. RnWhat is already with the pad needs a period of time to get used to to handle such a generous opening. There are no defects, which are well known at the time of purchase but do not have to scare. Lens in focus does not fit perfectly with action pictures, some chromatic aberration easily resolved with ps.rnPesante but proportioned above all with bodies with bg, nice to die for, solid and unique.rn

Pros: Delicate, pictorial colors; Very high overall quality.

Cons: His optical defects, on the other hand, I think are his merits.

Opinion: A lens that reveals the light where there is darkness. If you do not see it, mount this glass eye and take it. Its apparent defects such as chromatic aberrations and soft, sharp opening sharpness, consider its strengths. Natural saturation, vivid and never exaggerated colors, widespread livery in trivial frames. The ring of fire is sweet and buttery, with long run for manual fire. The younger brother is a good goal, too, quick, sincere, sharp and precise. The 1.8 is a nice toy. 1.2 is less obedient and difficult to exploit; 1.2 is not a toy, but it's a jewel to play with. It is difficult to focus the fire during an action that is difficult to use in busy environments, but the fun it gives is remarkable. The technique serves little, it serves fantasy and so much, so much exercise to learn how to use it.

Pros: And 'the optics from portrait par excellence.

Cons: Weight, size, slow autofocus, cost, tendency to suck up dust, excessive cromatrice aberrations.

Opinion: You either love him or hate him, there is no perspective for undecided. If you love him worth every penny it costs, if you do not love him you are 100 defects. And 'the optics of the final picture, but it fits a few other genres. Together with 50L in my opinion is the only fixed inevitable in light kit Canon "substantial". This is not only very deliberately a technical review because by using it one can figure out what you can give (for better or for worse) this perspective, certainly not the best of itself to photograph walls or optical targets.

Pros: All except one

Cons: Nothing except one, the weight / marker

Opinion: A lens that technically will be controversial, but fortunately they are all mental blowjobs because the results are pictures not the bits behind them. rnQuasi discounted want to use it in TA, almost certain to get magic. RNE 'unfortunate use purely portraiture view the focal, but there is always the 50L which is good, use the Big One in the street would become very complicato.rnL'autofocus is very slow in the first instance, then wakes up and runs after all 'Homo sapiens as long as the latter does not embark a motorcycle or fly. Precise, if you mess up in 1.2 is your fault is not a Sigma, the subject has two eyes and a nose and usually you have to aim at your discrezione.rnrnUn against, primarily for people like me traveling and we would like to have portable equipment, is obviously the weight, too, but oh well forgive him.

Pros: Target only from the impression, especially when used at the widest apertures, but also excellent for studio sessions.

Cons: I would say that its flaws make it unique, so for me to have advantages: eg., A certain sensitivity to flare, if properly channeled, gives an aura magic and dreamy to the images produced.

Opinion: It 'a goal-oriented purely to certain genres: portrait, fashion, glamor, conceptual images and astratte.rnLa its footprint is often recognizable, characterized as it is by airiness of surrender and a pictorial blur that bring him close to some beautiful goals Leica.rnEssendo a lens constructed with the contribution of aspherical lenses, has the typical defined contrast between the subject and the background, that someone may like, other meno.rnIo love him very much in certain situations, while others prefer to use the preasferico Leica M Summilux 75 1.4 (first Leica M240, now Sony a7II), characterized by a very soft and gradual focus, for a yield of more vintage.rnLa 85 1.2 yield is more like that of most modern Leica M Summicron 75 apo asph, which is also characterized by a more defined contrast of blur to the entire apertura.rnIn any case, I consider the 85 f / 1.2 L II one of the essential for the way I fotografare.rnrnrn

Pros: Brightness

Cons: I do not know it really is more efficient than the little brother 1.8

Opinion: Taken from the rampage I have not slept for several nights because over 2,000 Euros are so many for a goal, especially if you are not professional. In the end I could not resist and bought kg of glass. In hand and 'definitely a beautiful object, imposing. The build quality and 'typical L. Impresses the view from the front lens. 6d mounted on the machine I made a bit of test shots. The ficus car and 'indeed especially for its slow, only suitable placed shots, but you know it is' fiber from environmental portrait. It is not 'certainly a lens that can be used for much else. The colors that returns are very beautiful and natural and defocused and 'very nice. I must confess though that I was not impressed as it may have done the 135 L f2 that I think is really the best lens ever proven. I also took L 85 mm indoors because the 135 can really be too long. What I honestly have not got to try and '1.8 which quanto apparently offers exceptional quality at a price 5 times lower, and that with the money saved could then buy both the 135 that another lens more. But rationality and reason do not always have the upper hand. For sure it's a quality product, but to exalt the qualities you need to use it in extreme lighting conditions. I can think of shots of ceremonies in church, rather than the glamorous, obviously with natural light. In retrospect, I can think of that would make more sense to buy the 50 1.2 as the focal 85 mm and 'well served by 70/200 2.8 zoom that still have practical objectives and beautiful, flanked by 135 for specialized use close-ups. If the budget is not a problem and 'a lens that you should have in your kit because then you can have no excuses: if the picture does not come out well it will not be for lack of technical means, but for their inability to know how to exploit as must. In the case of 135 the feeling is' more immediate.

Cons: Nobody

Opinion: I recently this perspective that replaced the brother 1.8. I'm very pleased I found it used and I took advantage because of the price. I find it an optical character and difficult to tame for this I like. Initially it was not love at first sight but then calmly proved to live up to my expectations. Pros: blurred magic, sharpness at grand openings, AF accuracy, construction, value priced right.

Cons: nobody

Opinion: The undisputed king of the portrait. Give dream images. An absolutely excellent lens in every aspect. Quality of sublime shots already in TA. Heavy, full of great glass inside and built with painstaking care, to the lens hood. It offers a dreamlike blur and a unique three-dimensionality of its kind. With 5DmkIII, but also with 6D, the autofocus is surgical. Personally I use it mostly in AI Servo and never to again. Absolutely fantastic and flawless. Turn photos into dreams. Can not speak ill of him. The focus continues forward but just put it in MF and portray him manually before storing. Sin is not weather sealed. Crazy goal.

Pros: Sharpness in TA, blurred phenomenal colors

Cons: Weight, Slow (but not a lens to use "fast"), it takes a lot of patience to get it right the fire 1.2

Opinion: What, in my opinion on FF is THE lens from portrait. You can do everything, it has a three-dimensional frightening. This lens is born and must die 1.2 to 1.2 !! It makes no sense to close the diaphragm, otherwise it is better to spend € 1,400 less and get version 1.8. It weighs a lot, the focus is relatively slow. Before focusing council to hold your breath. If you breathe in the focus and shoot are sure that you will move to that half a millimeter sufficient to lift the blurry photo. The CAs are present, but to be 1.2 is more than acceptable and correctable on PS. All things to keep in mind, but in the end just a few days to use it and using it without too much trouble. Once back home you will have a smile to 67 teeth to the photo that gives, but your wallet much lighter !!!

Cons: No one gives only joys.

Opinion: it was love at first click, this is 85, I do not think can be beaten! Pros: Superb for portraiture, absolute dominant in its category, second to none; of course the portraits are her daily bread but it is always a good idea to use in every circumstance and it will not disappoint you!

Cons: Slow autofocus and relevant weight, 1 kg of glass, I also add that the mechanics and the construction of the optic with external movement causes excessive battery consumption, so I advise, if there is time to do so, to help shift of the focus ring manually.

Opinion: It is a lens that needs to be appreciated and known. The unique feature that makes it unique is its wide diaphragm opening that goes beyond any expectation. Anyone who buys such a beast can only use it all open af ??/ 1.2 not so much to use it in low light conditions but to get that blurred effect typical of this lens. In order to use af / 1.2 even in abundant light conditions, using ND filters to reduce light input and recover the necessary stop for proper exposure, the blur that returns is unique. Its focal length can also bring two subjects into the foreground at the minimum focusing distance of 0.95m, using a FF, which is not possible with the equally valid 135mm f / 2L. To have both eyes in the focus of a subject, you have to be parallel to the optic plane, and in any case just a small movement to that opening that you easily lose fire, but if you can pick the right time the show is garantito.rnThis is an update to what has been written above: rnThat I can say at a distance of time that if you use more closed diaphragms than 1.2 and the quality of the image it returns is excellent and it makes its higher optical rank rank , the files they produce are of high quality!

Pros: The best optics Canon in my possession. Returns a three-dimensional offering excellent photo opportunity "unique" for color and sharpness. I would call this light a great brush but ... you have "already" know how to paint.

Cons: Weight (about 1 kg), rear lens practically "flush", AF but not fast enough for the required use.

Opinion: This lens leaves you feeling that you do not like to make more. The trend Canon, I think unfortunately, is addressed in the future towards optical lighter and "fast". The cost of 85 L I would not put him among the "against" because I think it is perfectly aligned with the quality of the optics. E 'hardly necessary to say that, by using it with f / 1.2, the results are unique but we must also experience (and a lot), to be able to get the best.

Pros: sharpness colors blurred everything everything everything .... this lens becomes a drug ..... 1.2 is a LAMA CRAZY

Cons: weight and slow AF .....

Opinion: one of my favorite lenses .... absolutely specific and little eclectic (imho) its quality 'is frightening and produces dependence since the early scatti.rnPesa really too tired immediately transport to the neck, at least for me ... the AF is a slow awkward but everything else satisfies and makes you forget this once only drawback ... rnprezzo is a sore point but we know that there is worth all the money spent ....

Pros: Everything! Ensures seriously superb and incredible optical performance. Is the ideal choice for professionals who want to make the perfect shot in low light conditions without using a flash.

Cons: You may be impressed by the sharpness of the shots :-) Do not try it because you would surely debts to buy it.

Opinion: I do not think I've ever seen and tried a 'optics of such quality and sharpness. Circular aperture for excellent background blur. At f 1.2 the focus seems to emerge from the fog. That is certainly all the money it costs. I 've tested on the 6d and I never disconnected. It contains a high level of performance and functional in a structure resistant to dust and moisture.

Pros: bokeh gorgeous, clear already at f 1.2, precision of 'auto-focus, three-dimensional image

Cons: is not a suitable optics to all photographers and all types of photography

Opinion: It 'a wonderful optics. The own for a year and although it has also other excellent optics for use in my kit that could somehow replace it, I find it invaluable. Unfortunately there is a lens for everyone and I am not referring to the price but the fact that those who are willing to buy should be aware that this view is not the most versatile optical into circulation, has a fast autofocus, and you think it is quite cumbersome compared to its focal length, but if you love the picture, take pictures with natural light also very dim, wrap your subject in a painting that seems out of focus, then this is the Goal for you. There is to be noted that the autofocus is not fast but it is very accurate even at f 1.2, in fact when you use it you have to manually turn the focus ring from minimum distance to infinity to about 260 ° almost a full circle ! The construction is very solid, impressive, fascinating even, a work of art that rewards those who forgives his Peraltro necessary defects with the images that easily will be part of your favorite shots and want to show it to everyone.

Pros: Extreme sharpness. For the rest I should repeat what others have already pointed out!

Cons: Just a bit slow AF (on 5D2!) But we are in terms of fraction of a second!

Opinion: Mighty to see him, bulky in the hands, you are almost fear that it might explode like a bomb (!), But how much satisfaction! Out of curiosity I tried the front-back focus (freehand) on three piles placed at a distance of no more than three cm. one from the other. Well, it was only the central focus, perfectly, the other appeared only indistinct shadows. For the rest is yet to be discovered; own this objective only a few days, but it has already won. I hope in the near future to post good photos and submit them to the judgment of many much more experienced than me.

Pros: Exceptional clarity in relation to the center opening high; blurred fabulous, second perhaps only to 50/1.2L. The migior mediotele portraits of the many that I've tried

Cons: Weight, size, focus-by-wire; slow Af, cost

Opinion: In all the years I had several objectives portrait, I try to list: Canon 85/1.8, 100/2, 135/2L Nikon 85/2 ais, afd 85/1.4, 105/2.5 AIS, 105/1.8 AIS, 135 / 2 ais Leica M Summicron 90/2, Apo Summicron 90/2, Summilux 75/1.4, Apo TELYT 135/3, 4 Contax 85/1.4, 100/3, 5, 135/2 Until I got the Canon 85 / 1.2 L II considered the best overall Nikkor 85/1.4 afd, but this Canon beat while valuable every rival for portraits semplcemente is the best, the best in all respects. The "flaws" that I listed are "acts due" to achieve these levels of performance combined with an opening record (and the consequent blurred that it can get).

Pros: Amazed surprised enthusiastic, has no equal

Cons: maybe a little expensive but then the quality you pay

Opinion: in all these years I had the opportunity to try different quality objectives but genuinely nice and valid as the 85 1.2 I had never. The its enthusiastic congratulations to canon worked pretty well anything really that makes regret the objectives of high quality Leica lens enters this law among the few targets high quality

Pros: The best portrait lens available. Sharpest already at full aperture. Blurred pasty and three-dimensionality without equal. Chromaticity worthy of his fame. Also aesthetically beautiful.

Cons: AF slow, but there is a reason (explained in review). And 'heavy, but well balanced and personally I do not feel fatigue. The minimum distance of 95 cm MAF is a lot, but it helps to keep in focus both eyes even at full apetura. The only two real flaws are the high price and the extension outside of a couple of inches shorter distances. I would have preferred a movement as entirely within the 50 mm f / 1.2.

Opinion: Construction: Compact, rugged and all that fat in his round one pound of weight. When you hold her in his hands grasp at all and for all its size L, and there is even of aesthetic appeal, visual grandeur and sense of pleasure when handling it. From the building immediately understands that the lens is designed for portraiture: the ring of MAF, in fact, it is soft and ideally suited to manual focus, intercorrendo plenty of space between different adjustment notches, so as to have maximum precision and easier to manage in the MAF manual. It 'is therefore understandable why the AF is not an arrow, since the movement is wider than other optics. If then we hope that the engine has to move an entire group Gauss (at least I think I have understood so) it is justified by itself. In my view, therefore, it is not correct to say that the AF is slow, but it is "reflective", ie designed for genus shooting very specific. Unfortunately, the AF movement is not only internal, but, at the minimum distance of MAF, the barrel protrudes a couple of inches. Do not bother, but I would have preferred a movement only internal, such as the 50 mm f / 1.2. A curiosity: the focus ring to focus only works with the camera turned on. Weight: Here the only objective thing is the number and its unit of measurement: 1 pound round one. To be honest it can be frightening. I myself, before buying, I was very hesitant also because of this "ingredient". I must say, though, that was more scared than anything else. I brought this to the neck 85 mm for at least 4 hours, walking in the city at a steady pace and I felt tired or contraindications more or different than other standard optical L. The weight is well balanced and not bulky size makes it very manageable when it is in motion, perhaps with the support of a hand to be lighter on the back and neck. I found it verybut much more unmanageable the 24-70 L, whose ingombranza hindered my movements. This speech, however, must be interpreted according to the hand of the writer: male, young, with good muscle tone. I think that a woman, perhaps in minute size, would certainly another judgment in this regard and would be far greater difficulty in managing the weight of the barrel. Images and bokeh: In general, the lens finds its vocation in the early plans, activities performed with excellence will ever get the chance to meet with other lenses. It 'something that I hypothesize, but known as the minimum focus distance (95 cm) allows you to take a close-up f / 1.2 without incurring the unfortunate problem of having one eye in focus and the other does not. These images, for example, were taken at 90 cm at the maximum opening (1, 2, 3). The item that is spread throughout the network for which the 5D Mark II the focus is impossible to find absolutely misleading. It 'clear that you can not expectto focus a perfectly eye to 7 meters away f / 1.2, but this is evident for a physical factor. It 'true that the AF on the 7D is more handsome, but this happens with all lenses, not only with the 85 mm. The thing I wonder the most is the extraordinary focus that gives: mellow, warm, incredibly three-dimensional. It seems to me that the lens is able to create beautiful tonal contrasts and a reading light is very faithful to reality, so that in pp interventions could be reduced to the minimum wage. Sharpness, detail and smoothness are the flagships of a lens that can hold its own already at full aperture and an optical perfection is already at f / 1.4, up to f / 8. At f/11 I seem to notice some diffraction, but here I leave to those in the know far more than me and specialized sites. Interior and exterior: Needless to say that working indoors with this objective, instills a sense of humor. Allows you to play beautifully with the light, even freehand mantenenincredibly doses in times of safety and, therefore, avoiding the rough, without pumping the iso oversized. For those, like me, loves to work openings extreme is some difficulty in sunny days, which is not enough 1/8000 to take without overexposing wide. A filter NDx2 is perhaps a solution to the discomfort. Conclusions: The 85 mm f / 1.2 costs and costs much. It 'sublime performance perspective, but also niche. Hardly be used for purposes other than portraiture or creative photos, however, these days, I have also used the street. The 50 mm f / 1.2 is, from this point of view, far more versatile, thanks also to an AF more manageable in most situations. The purchase of a similar goal, therefore, is recommended only for professionals or advanced amateur portrait, especially love that photo in the foreground, I think the purpose for which it was designed. For the half-length is already well on 50 mm. That said posI finally throw in the state a very full satisfaction from every point of view, despite the price turns out to be, in my view, too. --- Www.pdbzone.com

Pros: Brightness (obvious), blurred, sharpness and colors.

Cons: AF not fast, weight, shape a little 'uncomfortable ... handling it can escape, need to calibrate perfectly the front-back focus if you want to get the maximum.

Opinion: Unfortunately the lens in question is not mine, I could use it only for 24 hours for a concert, on loan, but I appreciated the charming qualities that have made it a legend. Amazing portrait lens, I found it more comfortable with the 7D than the 5Dmk2, especially for AF. I had to adjust the front-back focus on both bodies, or showed a clarity not great and a fair amount of chromatic aberration. Once calibrated has changed the face! Blurred beautiful, excellent sharpness (but the 70-200 2.8 is 2 at the same opening is a bit 'better), heavy weight and shape of the barrel a little' uncomfortable and elusive, if you add that handling such a lens is already his hands shake ..... I have not heard the problem of vignetting, very well right from the camera body. The AF power in manual mode, prevents some operations, such as manual focus mode when viewing in live-view.

Pros: One of the best lenses available: large separation and three-dimensionality, excellent yield with all sizes of sensor.

Cons: The FF cartoon wide open, but it definitely improves closing. AF slow

Opinion: I forgive him waiting for its defects (venial sins), because it is one of the best lenses available: large separation and three-dimensionality, excellent yield with all sizes of sensor (the FF cartoon, but it's part of the legend), creaminess without the same focus. On the 5DII AF is a disaster, but with the 1D becomes gestibilissimo and utilizzabilissimo in AF. It is very good for portraits more or less ambientati and with its fantastic brightness allows depth of field very minimal and often fascinating. It 'sa bit heavy and seems full of "glass" probably is and the glass is of the highest quality.
