nikon_afs35gNikon AF-S 35mm f/1.8G

Pros: Colors, lights, AF, lightness, sharpness already from f2

Cons: Slight chromatic aberrations at f1.8

Opinion: I had literally fallen in love with the 35 f1.8 DX that I had left in the kit for the atmosphere and the shades of light it came. however, despite the zero cost and the absurd quality on the FF it was necessary to crop relatively to eliminate vignetting. On the advice of several I went on the famous Sigma Art but an absurd disappointment, especially for the fact that 2 photos out of 4 were to be thrown away because the fire was wrong for no reason, plus it had other very serious defects considering how it was decanted, in addition to not giving me that something I expected. At this point I decided to go back to the Nikon and I opted for this 1.8 that is made to go a little into the background because of the 1.4; As soon as I took it I went downtown to try it and the first shot I said ... FINALLY it's him. Took two photos that were perfect not to have to fix a hair in PP. It behaves in a somewhat special way, at open apertures the contrasts increase, a little vignetting is a bit of vividness, at more closed apertures, already from f2.8 the photo becomes more neutral. I'm so glad I took it.

sigma_35_f1-4Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

Pros: Sharpness to f>2.8

Cons: Weight, sharpness up to f2, AUTOFOCUS (disastrous)

Opinion: I had this lens for 4 months. Honestly from the first shots it was not love at first sight because as color rendering I preferred the Nikon (among this I used for years the 35 f1.8 dx slightly cropped and I liked a lot) that interpret the light in a more neutral and "creamy" way than this that deviates towards cold colors, which is one more thing to fix in PP if you do not want this type of rendering and in any case even if arranging the BW in PP does not get the same result as the Nikon. The weight is a lot for a lens that is used above all for Street and "stolen" photographs in quotation marks where lightness and manageability count, but if it really gave something more would be partly justified. The sharpness praised by many at f1.4 is unthinkable and you have to go up to f2.8 to have acceptable results (which for portraits would not be bad not to highlight the defects of the skin, for heaven's sake). The sore point is the autofocus, on 4 shots 2 are to be thrown away because it makes mistakes for no apparent reason. You should always shoot from live view to overcome the problem (on mirrorless so it does not occur as a defect), as well as being rather slow. In practice there is I see it well only for studio portraits with live view. Having said that considering these serious shortcomings I decided to replace it with the Nikon 35 f1.8 ED and I would say that it was love again at first sight.

nikon_d780Nikon D780

Pros: Live view, high iso hold, fine calibration Auto lenses, delayed exposure, af speed, colors and image quality

Cons: It does not support D750 remote control.

Opinion: Passing from D750 the first thing you notice if you have been owners for at least a year is the color management and in general the color range, in fact the D750 on the lights often deviated on the yellowish and with little info (despite WB tests) that was difficult to patch in post. Now the problem has been solved and in general the colors are at a higher level. On the tripod shooting from m-up I used to use the button remotely but it was no longer supported on this version (at the limit there is SnapBridge) but then after I found the delayed shot as an option I solved most of the problem. The iso compared to the 750 have improved as a seal and not a little, at 1600 the photo already had noise, on the 750 instead with the 780 to have the same grain you have to climb more or less half a stop above 3200 (tests with NR deactivated). Another interesting thing is that comparing two photos 750-780 the 780 same photo and same calibration seems to have 8-10 mp more as a definition and honestly I do not know why this thing. The most interesting thing is the automatic fine calibration of the lenses which is a net gear more than the 750, tari all the lenses in 10 min and both at the minimum focal length and at the max and you are sure to always hit the focus with the viewfinder. As for the af is very fast especially from live view that is derived mirrorless and the burst is scary.
