Venus Laowa 11mm f/4.5 FF RL Pros: Lightness, size, excellent workmanship, reduced distortion, innovative optical solutions, use on full frame, RF mount availability. Cons: Perimeter sharpness acceptable only for central apertures, vignetting, lack of electronic connection with the camera (totally manual, no exif data). Opinion: The main reason why I decided to buy this lens was because it represents a solution, more unique than rare, to have a lens of "pocket" size and weight, to be used with full frame mirrorless (Canon included). Moreover, with innovative optical devices able to limit the barrel distortion, which often dominates these focal lengths. Let's say, in summary, that it answers the question very well: how many times will I ever use such a wide angle? The weight and size, alone, make it an accessory that is difficult to leave at home, in many situations (such as a demanding excursion or a short stay with air travel) in which an optic, perhaps more performing, but much heavier, would have remained in the drawer. The price does not make it an absolute economic lens, despite being of Chinese manufacture (Venus Optics) and devoid of any electronic component, and can only be justified by the fine workmanship, the good quality of the crystals and the original engineering of the optical solutions adopted. The only defects worthy of note (in addition to some limits but implicit in the technical characteristics) are the vignetting (also this if we want a little discounted in an 11mm of this size on full format), the reduced brightness and the poor perimeter sharpness on extreme diaphragms. sent on March 27, 2023 |
