irix_150_f2-8macroIrix 150mm f/2.8 Macro

Pros: All

Cons: Nobody

Opinion: A few weeks ago Irix announced the Sony version of this lens, I who had been waiting for it for a long time did not miss it. There are 4 things I want from a macro lens. Image quality, delicate blur, durable construction and last but not least, the tripod ring. He has all these characteristics, and many more. I practice only macro photography and I have other optics for this genre, I will list a couple to make the comparison with the irix. My macro telephoto lens so far has been the Nikon micro 200 f4 AI, beautiful optics but at f16 it begins to lose sharpness, plus it stops at the 1: 2 magnification ratio. I also use the Sony 90mm macro, the blur of 90-100mm I do not like very much because it is not very delicate. Leaving this aside, the 90mm has a huge flaw, it does not have the tripod ring, which for me is indispensable. Every time I use it, if I have to switch from a vertical to a horizontal frame, I have to detach the camera from the tripod and hang it up to change position. This can be difficult in the wild and animals frightened by too much movement can run away. With the Irix I solved these problems, now all the features I need are finally enclosed in a single goal. The sharpness is excellent and remains constant up to f22, which is very useful for macros. It is quite heavy as I like it, the Sony bodies are always too small and the pair can become unbalanced, so I have always attached the battery grip and the grip becomes much larger and more comfortable. The focus ring is very long and allows you to reach magnifications of over 1:1 without the micrometric slide. I've been using it for a week, it's the perfect lens for me and it's giving me great satisfaction. The lens arrives well packed with a convenient carrying case supplied. Now the macro telephoto lenses are too ignored by the manufacturers, they continue to present the usual lenses between the zooms and fixed 1.2 hyperexpensive that do not serve me at all and have fed me up for a long time. For this I have to double congratulate Irix, who did not copy the others and produced this excellent macro unique in its kind that I had been waiting for a long time.

sony_fe90macroSony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS

Pros: Very sharp, beautifully built and weatherproof

Cons: Lack of tripod ring, so more suitable for freehand use

Opinion: I have owned this lens for almost 3 years and it satisfied me, even if it has a very serious lack for me. It is very sharp, rather heavy as I like it and durable. I often photograph with unfavorable weather without any kind of coverage so as not to waste time when I have to shoot. It has taken dust, rain and mud at will and is like new. The thing I like least is the blurred, with closed diaphragms it is too marked and not very delicate for my taste. But this is not a defect, it is something common to all 90 or 100mm macros. I am used to the blur of 180 and 200mm that now unfortunately no one produces anymore. The real flaw for me very serious is the lack of the tripod ring. When I use this lens I have to hook the camera to the tripod, so if I place it horizontally and then I want to shoot vertically I have to unhook the camera to change position. I photograph in very uncomfortable positions and this operation can often become problematic. In addition, something very important for me, with such movements I risk scaring the animals I photograph. This problem led me to use this lens much less in favor of the old 200mm macro nikon, with a more delicate blur and equipped with a tripod ring. With the nikon it takes 2 seconds to turn it vertically together with the camera, plus the system hooked with the ring is much more balanced. I don't understand why the various 100mm lenses don't have them. The 90 remains, however, along with the 35, my first choice when I photograph at night freehand, often in the rain and in places where the tripod is not usable.

sony_fe35_f1-8Sony FE 35mm f/1.8

Pros: Excellent construction and beautiful yield

Cons: Very light that seems not to have it.

Opinion: I use this lens on my sony for macro sets, especially at night. It is very well built, I have also used it in dust, mud and rain and it has never given me problems. Beautiful color rendering and excellent detail at all apertures. The focus is very precise and has a very short distance, plus with an extension tube it can be used a few cm from the subjects. Excellent side button to switch to manual focus that for me is indispensable. The only thing that bothers me is the weight, very light, when I mount it on my cars with battery grip it is like not having it.

nikon_ai200microNikon Ai 200mm f/4 Micro

Pros: All metal construction, it is not heavy but it is very convenient to use, removable hood, yield, colors and blurred

Cons: Slight chromatic aberration in some places when used against the light

Opinion: It's the lens I use the most for macros on sony. It is a Nikon AI, so perfectly built, all metal, removable hood and manual rings that I really like. Construction very different from modern optics, some made of plastic and very light that you don't even feel in your hand. I used it in all situations, in damp areas, in the rain, it gathered dust, never had a problem. The detail is great from f4 to f16 then begins to drop a bit but I shoot only from f4 to f11, rarely f16. The blur and detachment of the tops are very delicate and pasty, much better than the 90/100mm macros. This is one of the reasons why I prefer it. Wonderful color rendering. Its only flaw is that if used against the light, which I often do, it can cause slight chromatic aberrations in some places around the subjects, but nothing serious I have seen much worse even on modern optics.
