Reviews of cameras, lenses, tripods, heads and other accessories written by Heura

nikon_14d_f2-8Nikon AF 14mm f/2.8 D ED

Pros: Overall performance, specially at close focus. FOV, speed and size & weight (when compared to the much better Nikkor 14-24).

Cons: Price very high. Difficult to get in good condition for less than 1000€. It has also quite weird distortion and is not perfectly sharp wide open in the corners (none is, except for the Nikkor 14-24 wich is a monster). Another Cons is the difficulty to use filters. I have a self-made cokin adapter and I use the x_pro grads & Polarizer, but I have a little vigneting in the very far corners. Not a big problem: I just re-frame a little bit, going to more panoramma and that's all.

Opinion: This lens is much better than what one can derive for most of the reviews, specially if you take into account your alternatives. I use this lens on a D700, and I also have the SIGMA 12-24 4.5-5.6 DG HSM. I have compared these lenses quite deeply, and the Nikkor is a much much better performer, specially at close focus distance. At close focus, the 12-24 is not even a true 12mm. In fact, the FOV of the 14mm Nikkor is the same than the SIGMA at 12mm. Overall, a good performer extremelly well built. The Nikkor 14-24 seems better, but is a monster ! I have not tried the SAMYANGs (manual focus) nor the TAMRON or the fixed focal lengh SIGMA.

sigma_12-24Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG HSM

Pros: Unique zoom range. Outstanding control of distortion. In my case, I prefere it over the newer MKII version (sharper but with more distortion). It is possible to use it as a 18-35 mm shift zoom (perspective correction)in an APS-C body using a shift adaptor (for what it is fundamental to have low distortion).

Cons: Not the sharpest lens on earth. The use of front filters is difficult and expensive (but possible).

Opinion: This is a curious lens. I use it on my full frame body (D700) for ultra-wide landscapes. For this, the only problem is the use of filters (graduated and polarizer). You will have to choose between PHOTODIOX (expensive and limited assortment) or COKIN X-PRO (extremely expensive and hard to find, with quite good assortment). In the second case, you will have to make your own adapter for COKIN filter holder. This is not very difficult, but requires some skills (to do it, don't use the original and expensive COKIN filter holder, but a cheap chineese copy). I also use this lens as a perpective correction shift zoom (18-35 mm) mounting it on my NEX 7, using a modified shift NIKON to NEX adapter from KIPON. The original adapter is VERY FINE, but it does not provide aperture control on G-type lenses. The modification I made was to control apperture. This is not an easy modification, but it is possible. The resulting tool is amazing for architectural photography.
