Notodontidae 01

I Notodontidi sono una famiglia di lepidotteri appartenente alla superfamiglia Noctuoidea. E'una famiglia di falene con circa 3.800 specie conosciute. Le falene di questa famiglia si trovano in tutte le parti del mondo, ma sono più concentrate nelle zone tropicali, in particolare nel continente Americano. Particolarmente presente e con cattiva fama, nella zona dei rilievi, è la Thaumetopoea pityocampa più conosciuta come processionaria del pino. Le specie di questa famiglia tendono ad avere un aspetto pesante, le ali a riposo sono ripiegate lungo la parte posteriore del corpo. Raramente si possono, in questa famiglia, vedere dei colori vivaci, di solito le colorazioni prevalenti sono il grigio il o marrone, ad eccezione della sottofamiglia Dioptinae (Grimaldi e Engel, 2005). Gli adulti non si nutrono.
