![]() | Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II Pros: Weight, speed and accuracy of AF, excellent sharpness, excellent yield with 1.4x III and 2x III multipliers, Cons: Transport case too small and there is no lens belt, rather high price. Opinion: Driven by positive reviews and looking for a quality, but at the same time transportable canvas, I decided to replace my old Canon 500 mm f4 IS with this lens and found it to be of a rather poor quality. From the first tests done with the Canon 7D Mk II on static subjects, located at distances between 10 and 40 meters, I realized that the lens fails to focus: the fire dances and the photos are 90% blurred , also a lot.rnThe real problem, however, lies in very little sharpness. Since I also own the Canon 400 mm f5.6, I made comparisons, always on the same static subjects, and I found that the old 400 mm f5.6 is always sharper than 400 mm IS DO II.rnSe it was just about problems focusing, the problem would be minor, but even in the few shots in focus you can clearly see the lack of sharpness and the fact that even fails to equalize the old 400 mm f5.6, which costs six times less. And do not tell me that 40 meters are too many, because the old 400 mm f5.6 to 40 meters is una lama.rnI cases, then, there are two: the lens has been assembled badly (it would be the minor problem), or the lens is of its nature not very clear (and in this second case the problem would be unsolvable). I definitely question the positive opinions that have given the other owners of this lens, I assume it is mine to have problems and then I packed it and sent it to the Canon center for a check and I await an answer. In any case, the judgment can only be totally negative because, if on a target of just over a thousand euros, such as 400 mm f5.6, you can also expect some factory defect, on a lens that costs € almost 7,000 problems do not have to be there.rnrnUpdate. A month after the purchase (as CPS Gold I should have repaired within 3 days !!!!) the goal and returned back with the words "Defect not found". According to the laboratory, therefore, the goal is perfect. I propose myselfin any case, to send it back together with the machine body, which try to carry out the calibration. According to them, then, it is normal that a target of € 7,000 is less clear than a lens of the same focal length but from € 1,200.RnI am increasingly convinced that Canon has come down a lot of level and that the laboratories pull to campare.rnA this point I would like to try to compare it with that of those who speak very well.rnUpdate update: Canon Italy, after three months of discussions, I replaced the view and the results I get now with the new one can not be absolutely comparable with those I got with the goal that they replaced me. This is very clear, even by mounting the 1.4x III multiplier and also with the 2x III multiplier. The lens is sharper even than the Canon 500 mm F / 4 IS, which I sold. I add one last thing: Canon Italia, although replacing the lens, did not want to admit that the previous objective had any kind of problem. sent on December 21, 2017 |
