Pros: Weight, size, contrast, sharpness

Cons: none

Opinion: This lens works fantastic with 5D MKIV. Great sharpness wide open with 1.4x TC or even 2x: still perfectly usable. You will notice that focusing speed goes down whole using TCs and sometimes miss a shot with 2x TC but hey...it's handholdable 800mm F8! Some people complained about "nervous background". I can't confirm: bokeh looks great as well.

Pros: Sharpness, portable compatibility with 1.4X and 2.0X SERIES III multipliers

Cons: Price maybe, but compared to older siblings 400 f/4 and 600 f/4 much cheaper.

Opinion: I have never written reviews of goals but in this case I feel obliged to do so given the level of satisfaction for this lens. I'm going to come from 400 f/5.6, so the jump in quality was expected, but I have to say it went beyond my expectations. It is light enough to be used freehand for hours without major problems, and is not particularly bulky during transport as long as you remove the lampshed. I was lucky enough to find a used copy, practically new getting a considerable saving compared to the new one. For the kind of photography I practice in 99 % of cases, this is a fantastic goal. Combined with the R6, it enhances the focus capabilities of this new mirrorless body, allowing you to focus more on the composition. I almost always use it with the 1.4 X III extender mounted and of course on the R6, always with the EF-RF adapter, without ever noticing any drop in autofocus performance. Maybe with small or very shy birds it is a short thread, but it always depends on where you photograph and for me it is such the advantage in terms of footprint and weight compared to the big brother 500mm f/4 (which I admit I have never tried) that compromise in my opinion makes a lot of sense. Another plus is the very effective image stabilizer, which combined with the IBIS of the R6 allows its use freehand in most cases. I find myself in the need to use the tripod more and more rarely and almost only when I mount the 2.0X III.

Pros: Lightweight, versatile, sniper autofocus. Sharpness at the top

Cons: Price.. But the quality you pay

Opinion: I come from lens Canon 500 F 4 L is II.. And so accustomed to him I was a little doubtful that the little one could be on par. Well the Canon 400 F 4 do II and a real gem. Very light, versatile allows you to use it freehand everywhere. In sports or wildlife photography is really deadly. Sharpness, blurred, colors are at the highest levels. Used with TC 1.4 x III and 2x III works very well at professional level.. I absolutely do not regret the 500. Only downside the price. But it's worth them all.. and fantastic.

Pros: Weight, speed and accuracy of AF, excellent sharpness, excellent yield with 1.4x III and 2x III multipliers,

Cons: Transport case too small and there is no lens belt, rather high price.

Opinion: Driven by positive reviews and looking for a quality, but at the same time transportable canvas, I decided to replace my old Canon 500 mm f4 IS with this lens and found it to be of a rather poor quality. From the first tests done with the Canon 7D Mk II on static subjects, located at distances between 10 and 40 meters, I realized that the lens fails to focus: the fire dances and the photos are 90% blurred , also a lot.rnThe real problem, however, lies in very little sharpness. Since I also own the Canon 400 mm f5.6, I made comparisons, always on the same static subjects, and I found that the old 400 mm f5.6 is always sharper than 400 mm IS DO II.rnSe it was just about problems focusing, the problem would be minor, but even in the few shots in focus you can clearly see the lack of sharpness and the fact that even fails to equalize the old 400 mm f5.6, which costs six times less. And do not tell me that 40 meters are too many, because the old 400 mm f5.6 to 40 meters is una lama.rnI cases, then, there are two: the lens has been assembled badly (it would be the minor problem), or the lens is of its nature not very clear (and in this second case the problem would be unsolvable). I definitely question the positive opinions that have given the other owners of this lens, I assume it is mine to have problems and then I packed it and sent it to the Canon center for a check and I await an answer. In any case, the judgment can only be totally negative because, if on a target of just over a thousand euros, such as 400 mm f5.6, you can also expect some factory defect, on a lens that costs € almost 7,000 problems do not have to be there.rnrnUpdate. A month after the purchase (as CPS Gold I should have repaired within 3 days !!!!) the goal and returned back with the words "Defect not found". According to the laboratory, therefore, the goal is perfect. I propose myselfin any case, to send it back together with the machine body, which try to carry out the calibration. According to them, then, it is normal that a target of € 7,000 is less clear than a lens of the same focal length but from € 1,200.RnI am increasingly convinced that Canon has come down a lot of level and that the laboratories pull to campare.rnA this point I would like to try to compare it with that of those who speak very well.rnUpdate update: Canon Italy, after three months of discussions, I replaced the view and the results I get now with the new one can not be absolutely comparable with those I got with the goal that they replaced me. This is very clear, even by mounting the 1.4x III multiplier and also with the 2x III multiplier. The lens is sharper even than the Canon 500 mm F / 4 IS, which I sold. I add one last thing: Canon Italia, although replacing the lens, did not want to admit that the previous objective had any kind of problem.

Pros: Yield, speed and accuracy of AF, lightness, dimensions, multiplication

Cons: Cost

Opinion: After having long wished I have this lens for over a year and I can safely summarize my review in one word: excelled. Staying around the two kilograms of weight is easily transportable, even for hours during long hikes, and quietly usable even freehand. Excellent already at TA behaves very well even with the Canon 1.4 x III and contrary to what I expected does not show any decrease in yield as well as autofocus speed. The AF is always accurate and fast, to the point that very few times I have used the limiter. The stabilizer allows to shoot at very unthinkable times, I would say without a doubt that the four stops promised are real. Compared with the Canon 500/4 IS II of an output mate has proved quietly at par, much like quality that as AF speed.
