leica_m9Leica M9 / M9-P

Pros: CCD unsurpassed in colors: pasty, pastel,... from painting. Trivial and repeated many times, I know, but... from film. Manageability, lightness, compactness, available lens park, build quality. Even the black and white really not bad

Cons: Some difficulty (for me and for my eyes) to "digest" the frames of the viewfinder

Opinion: The greatest repentance of my life... photographic: traded in for a Hasselblad X1Dii, for which I never fell in love, I wish I had never made that choice; but, by now... Also because finding a perfect one (including the replaced sensor) like mine will never happen again. A machine that must be liked (or disliked) for what it is and what it can offer; therefore it is useless to repeat what it is not suitable for or what - obvious - limits it has; but the color files that come out of it I have not found in any other device. For black and white, only the Sigma (Foveon) have surpassed it, among those I had. Now, overcoming the romantic "cravings" of Leica, Hasselblad and Sigma, I have fun and try my hand at a Nikon d850: all that prose and poetry of the aforementioned and "difficult" niche objects is missing but, now: point, in focus in a moment, I shoot and ... done. This too is needed

hasselblad_x1d_iiHasselblad X1D II 50C

Pros: Build quality, file, size and weight, display and menu (and yes: the aesthetics!)

Cons: It lacks stabilization, just to have to say one...

Opinion: I come from Sigma SD4h, Leica M9 and this Hasselblad is giving me real pleasure in seeing what it can offer. I won't repeat anything about the specific features, because everyone - rightly - can find faults where others find merits: the way I shoot, I can only say that I am happy. In love with the black and white of the SD4h and the colors of the M9, I made the leap to the X1Dii with some fear of not doing the right thing. I did it :-) The black and white is spectacular and the colors are very natural. The remarkable detail and ease of use of the machine makes me click with ease. And then, after a diffident start, I find the proprietary Phocus software very good: compared with other programs, I'm moving more and more on it in the "development" of RAW. In the "Cons" I mentioned the lack of stabilization, but the shutter is so soft and discreet and the camera so well balanced and with an excellent grip that - at the moment - I didn't miss it (I use the 45mm. Maybe with the 90mm I would feel it...)

sigma_sd_quattro_hSigma SD Quattro H

Pros: Immediacy of the menus, ergonomics and construction, superior materials, image quality, black and white close to that of the film, already good quality of raw b/n developed in the room

Cons: operational slowness, even of the software, objectives that - in some cases - can be too cumbersome and heavy. It's certainly not the machine for all uses

Opinion: After so many second thoughts, I finally decided and replaced the Sony RX1rII (fantastic, beautiful, but with "too hard" and "digital" files for my taste) with this Sigma, attracted as I was by the reviews that talked about a Foveon sensor so close to the film (which I continue to use in the medium format). And, in fact, I have to say that - albeit with only a few shots taken and with software, although simple, still to be understood - the quality seems to me to be there. true colors, analog black and white. Then, it is true that it is not the machine with which to shoot on every occasion, but on this topic there are already many reviews, so there is no point in repeating them; the only thing I would like to add - but it is an opinion referring to my way of photographing - is that already in the many years of Kodachrome 25 and 64 I did not despair for some shot lost for not having in the car a film of 1600 ISO.... With the film it is not that you could change the sensitivity at will and I don't think it was a drama. For the rest, there is perhaps a lack of a fixed objective of human dimensions. I now mainly use the Sigma 30mm f1.4 Art and - although it is not among those suggested for the APC-h sensor - I do not notice any particular problems. I continue the study and the fun...

panasonic_gm5Panasonic GM5

Pros: Size and weight, picture quality, quality of some optical, build quality, presence viewfinder

Cons: some limit handling for its small size, the viewfinder that could have more definition, drums with little autonomy

Opinion: let's face it: the GM5 is a compromise choice, so closely linked to the specific needs. I have chosen (after having also had the GM1) to have an apparatus which assure me good performance in the face of absolute portability. Now, on a belt inside a neoprene case, I always carry it behind; mountain, city trip. Any opportunity is good. In short, the times when hiking in the mountains provide for a backpack dedicated to all the dimensions of the Nikon FA, and the Nikkor 25-50, 35-200 and 20 have a (good) memories ... rnLe qualities of GM5 are then clear: a decent sensor in a small body; very small. Combined with Panasonic 20mm then, he did discover a very beautiful view of the images; lose some oppotunità provided by zoom and focal most extreme (which I have in the kit 12-32 and 35-100), but I can cover 90% of my needs compared to a final quality superiore.rnSe then size and weight are not the priority is clear ch and there are many other machines that can do the same, and maybe more, for the same amount, but for the moment I hold me tight and I will enjoy it. But a second battery to carry around and a must ...
