![]() | Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM C Pros: excellent portability - good sharpness and good AF - great value for money Cons: lacks block at intermediate focal lengths especially at 400 mm - F 6.3 already from 130 mm Opinion: I bought this new lens from a physical / online store in Rome (about € 780) to mount it on my Nikon D500 that next to the D850 with the excellent Sigma 500 F4 for stalking bird photo sessions. While the D850 and the 500 F4 are obviously mounted constantly on gimbals and tripod for more static photos of the highest quality, the sigma 100-400 grafted on the D500 I use it for shots often even in flight that would otherwise be difficult to perform using the small windows of the stake. My opinion on the younger brother Sigma, even as owner of the coupled D850 + 500 F4, is highly positive, both for handling and for sharpness and resolution. Also consider the fact that given the weight of just over a kilo, the lens in question is excellent for itinerant hunting. Previously I also used the Sigma 150-600 sport for a few years and I can say that, apart from the focal length, the 100-400 has nothing to envy to its older brother. I do not know if it is thanks to the D500, a large SLR, but the 100-400 sigma also performs very well for AF performance and stabilization with focal length from crop factor apsc of the D500 which stands at 150-600 mm FF equivalent. To date, in ambush, on wild with acceptable distance (ducks and waders up to 30/40 meters, waders and passerines up to 8/10 meters), my shots with D500 and sigma 100-400 have become predominant compared to the coupled nikon D850 + Sigma F4 (which remains the top of the range) especially for the handling and the non-need to use a tripod. Pleasant note is that the Sigma 100-400 also holds the Sigma 1.4x duplicator, obviously losing sharpness and AF responsiveness, but thus configuring itself in a 140-560 that exploiting the crop factor of the D500 becomes a 210-840 mm. in extreme and very rare cases you can also mount the sigma 2x multiplier, obtaining a 200-800 F.13 FF equivalent, obviously only in MF and with significant loss of sharpness ... only for documentary shots with lots of light... Obviously the only negative note, if you can say so, the minimum aperture F.6.3 already at 130 mm, which makes it a bit "dark", but for a lens that weighs just over a kilo and has a lens diameter of 67 mm you can not expect more. Also I would have liked if there had been, as on the 150 600 sport, at least the block at the focal length 400 mm, not only what is instead present at 100 mm, which is very useful not to "shorten" inadvertently during the shots. For lighter outputs then I bought a collar of third brand very useful for any mounting on stand. Sigma 100-400 Final Judgement : vote 9 sent on March 30, 2023 |
![]() | Benro GH2 Pros: Value for money, material quality Cons: Nobody Opinion: I have no experience with other gimbals but I have been using Benro Gh-2 for a year with great satisfaction. Set up on Benro mach3 and with attached Nikon D610 + sigma 150-600 sports I can say that everything is very stable. I make naturalistic and avifauna in particular and the Gh-2 ensures great stability and fluidity even for flying subjects. RnFor the clutch controls in both vertical and horizontal axes, they are very close to locking with respect to other heads ..... no problem anyway, just know it and adjust the position. Very good clutch and fluidity even with heavy weights (D610 + Sigma 150-600 = about 4 kg) sent on November 03, 2017 |
