Fujifilm X-M5 Pros: Compactness, manageability and lightness; Crazy image quality and color science; Continuous and tracking autofocus; ISO sealing; Aesthetically beautiful; Cost. Cons: Q key; Only 4 custom slots; absence of viewfinder, flash, tropicalization and stabilization. Opinion: I state that I am an amateur but I have been photographing anyway since the days of film, being now 50 years old; I will talk about this camera only from the photographic side as I do not make videos, except for one every death of the pope. A few months ago I decided to treat myself to this little gem impressed by the absurd specifications in such a compact body. Well after a few thousand photos I have to say that I didn't regret it at all, on the contrary. First of all, I must say that the machine is solid despite the predominantly plastic construction; My sample is black and I sincerely recommend this color as it is very elegant. Even if I have to deal with basic ergonomics (which is why I immediately added a great Smallrig grip) and with the hated side-opening screen, I still have to say that I love this camera for a very simple reason: it takes incredible photos! All the film simulations currently offered by Fuji are present, including the Nostalgic Negative which for me is beautiful. The resistance to high ISO is amazing, so much so that I feel like saying that up to 6400 the files are absolutely usable (in BN you can even go to 12800 as long as you accept a little grain). The autofocus in AFS works as always very well but the good news is that thanks to the X-processor 5 even the AFC is finally at decent levels, with eye/face tracking and subject tracking that work very well. Despite the not very numerous function keys, I was able to customize the machine exactly as I like it, also taking advantage of the very useful touch shortcuts. Speaking of the screen: in general it is fine and the touch is very responsive, but I would have preferred a little more brightness; Not that it is not possible to shoot even under the sun with the right precautions, but it is obvious that you will never have the immersive experience of a camera with a viewfinder. The Q key is another sore point, it is actually a problem to operate as it is small and recessed, so I ended up remapping it to the REC key, I don't make videos anyway. The infamous film ring can be considered useless but in my opinion, if you know how to exploit it, it is not at all: it is true that it is not possible to use the recipes in the FS1/2/3 positions contrary to what happens on XE5 and XT30 III, but I remedied it by saving a Tri-X 400 recipe on the main menu and reserving a different color filter for each of the FS positions; on the ACROS position I then simply kept the simulation without filters. In any case, it is possible to take advantage of the 4 custom slots of the mode ring to save other recipes. However, summing up, despite the obvious limitations deriving from the extreme compactness and the lens of use like "vlogger", I would like to say that this camera is a real jewel, an object that really makes you want to go out and photograph. In my case, the very small size and weight combined with the amazing 27 f2.8 pancake make it the perfect combo for "everyday photography": when I can I always carry it with me and I am extremely satisfied. Sony A6400 Pros: Build quality, autofocus, versatility, tropicalization, lightness, compactness, electronic shutter, good workability of RAW. Cons: Absence of stabilization, viewfinder, ISO sealing, rolling shutter. Opinion: I had this camera for over 4 years and it was a really nice "gym" with which I started to devote myself to amateur photography in a satisfactory way. Pick it up and you already have a decent feeling of sturdiness, with a magnesium alloy body and a decent grip, certainly enough for most users. I mainly did street shots in black and white (almost always shooting in RAW and converting) but also family shots, portraits, parties and events, sometimes landscapes. I have always been satisfied with the workability of the files and I have taken shots that I am still very fond of. The jpegs, with the right adjustments, are decent and usable (even if the skin tones sometimes make you suffer). The autofocus needless to say is a bomb, I have always shot continuously and I have never had problems, compared to the a6000 that I had previously owned the leap forward is absolutely remarkable. The dynamic range is good, not exceptional, however among the many pearls of the camera there is the highlights exhibition mode that allows you to put the highlights in the range without burning them and which is excellent for creative shots such as silhouettes etc. The ISO hold is good up to 1600, I don't feel like recommending to go further, even if in B/W I have sometimes reached 2500/3200 with acceptable results. The burst is good (11FPS), the rolling shutter with electronic shutter is very bad and is really very intrusive. However, I used the ES a lot in normal lighting conditions but avoiding scenes with artificial lighting (presence of dark bands). The screen (touch and flip-up) but above all the viewfinder are of mediocre quality and make you suffer in bright conditions: you could have done better. I have rarely made videos but the a6400 has excellent color profiles that can be customized among other things also for jpegs; honestly, however, I didn't use them much because I found the special menu not very intuitive (although I know of creators who have managed to get good "recipes" similar to those of other brands). It was precisely the difficulty of having good shots in the camera that eventually made me switch to Fujifilm, and now I have an XM5 and an XT30 II that are practically perfect for my needs. The Sony was excellent and reliable but it no longer gave me the desire to go out to photograph and in these cases there is little to do, you have to change. Ultimately it is a machine that still in 2025 for me is excellent especially for beginners / enthusiasts or as a second / third emergency corps. For some things, however, it begins to feel the weight of its 6 years and that is why I recommend taking it used with a shot count of less than 10 thousand and not paying more than 650/700 euros.
