nikon_105dc Nikon AF 105mm f/2 D DC

Pros: Impeccable construction and old-fashioned aesthetics, perfect ergonomics (weight/size), silky bokeh, excellent color rendering and contrast.

Cons: "Soft" sharpness at f/2 (can be improved in post), autofocus not lightning fast, requires practice to tame the DC system.

Opinion: The 105mm DC is a fabulous lens, although very specific. It is a "slow" lens, to be enjoyed calmly, ideal for the studio or for posed portrait situations; the autofocus, in fact, is certainly not lightning fast (although precise in my opinion) and requires relatively static subjects to give the best. The construction is impeccable, entirely in metal and glass. Aesthetically it is beautiful and conveys a feeling of solidity and lightness at the same time: it is perfectly balanced and never weighs down the hand even after long shooting sessions. The files it churns out are simply fabulous: right and balanced contrast, faithful colors, even if the highlight remains the pasty blur. I tested the Defocus Image Control system, but I never integrated it permanently into the use I made of it: I found it almost superfluous, since the rendering of the files is already perfect for my needs. At full aperture (f/2) it can appear slightly soft, but it is a feature that can be easily corrected with a pinch of post-production. On Nikon D4: excellent results already at f/2, with a very balanced rendering. On D850: in my opinion it gives its best from f/5.6 upwards (I took portraits at f/8 which are simply a marvel for detail and depth). Overall I consider it a great lens. I reluctantly sold it only to finance the purchase of a second camera body, but it remains one of the best lenses I have ever had. Rating: 10.

nikon_24-70g_f2-8 Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 G ED

Pros: Image quality (sharpness and contrast), color rendition, lightning-fast autofocus, professional construction, current price/performance ratio.

Cons: Hardened zoom mechanics, longitudinal clearance.

Opinion: I have owned this lens since 2014 and it has unquestionably been the "backbone" of my kit. I have used it intensively to range between events, landscapes and portraits, always finding total reliability. The construction is solid, a mix of metal, glass and high-level rigid plastics. A mechanical aspect to consider is the movement of the barrel: the lens reaches the minimum extension around 50mm, while it stretches to the maximum excursion at 24mm and 70mm. In my sample, after years of honorable service, the zoom ring has developed a resistance of around 35mm, a "defect" common to many examples of this series which, however, does not affect its use. Weight and size are important: it is a rather long lens, especially when compared to the Sigma or Tamron alternatives for F mount. The lens hood is also imposing, but it has the advantage of being extremely solid (even in the attachment) and of effectively protecting the front element during zoom movement. Despite the years, it remains an absolute guarantee: an autofocus that is always very fast and precise, an image rendering that is excellent for me (for sharpness, colors and contrast). I have tested it on different bodies (D4, D800, D850 and D750) and it has always produced files of the highest level. At events, working with the right presets in the camera, the JPEGs it churns out are practically ready for delivery. Today it is found at really competitive prices and, in my opinion, remains a more sensible purchase than the VR version (even longer and bulkier). Rating: 9+!
