![]() | Nikon AF 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 D ED VR Pros: mechanics, weight, optical quality Cons: Minimum MAF distance a bit limiting Opinion: After years with my beloved 80-200 biferera I decided to extend the focal length with this lens, found cheaply used. I was worried about a consistent variation in weights and dimensions but I had to change my mind: by removing the plastic bayonet lens hood (which I never tolerated) and replacing it with the 77mm metal one of the 80-200 first series, the lens becomes very manageable in size and, together with the removal of the tripod collar (not as bad as described by others) it becomes easy to take out and store in the backpack, with a total weight lower than that of the 80-200. The optical performance is extremely satisfactory at all apertures and lengths and will make you want to carry it with you at all times. I didn't notice any noticeable drops in quality at longer focal lengths, probably because my specimen is of the second series (SN 4xxxxx) and clearly wants to be used at TA. The contrast is great and the shadows are legible. The colors are very natural, saturated. The mechanics are typical of those years: precise, solid, reliable, a blunt weapon. The af won't catch a fly in flight but if you exclude sports applications it almost never goes wrong (D700, D750). VR is a surprise: primitive but it works. It manages to ennoble in its use a lens that was created for photographic hunting. Extract and shoot. You get still images handheld even at 400mm at 1/50s, i.e. at least three stops of gain. In continuous mode it is also very effective in video, as long as you know how to manage the "symphony for autofocus and stabilizer". I don't regret my bighiera. sent on May 16, 2024 |
![]() | Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Pros: Versatility, performance, construction, price Cons: It takes a lot of imagination to find them Opinion: Although I already knew the specifics regarding the dimensions, the first approach left me perplexed: heavy, huge, almost embarrassing. In reality, then, so much exuberance can almost become a source of pride, since mounting it on a Nikon D700 (other 1100g) is rather balanced and you quickly get used to it. Except for the zoom ring, a bit excessive in the effort necessary to maneuver it. I do not think it is due to my specimen in particular but to the important amount of glass that is put in motion in about 60 ^ of rotation. My disappointment is all here, for the rest it is a masterpiece. I read many reviews talk about flare in the G1 version. In this G2 it is extremely rare, not to say absent. As soon as I got it, I tested this lens under a nagging rain at the last carnival of Viareggio; A show not to be missed for those who do not know. A night street with contrasts and plays of light capable of breaking the ambitions of the best optics if not specifically designed for such situations. The seal is perfect and aberrations non-existent, at least on my 12Mp sensor. Performance that pushes to search for difficult subjects because they allow you to extract all the sense of three-dimensionality. Even bokeh is very effective, even if contained by short focal lengths. Probably the great resolution puts the paw on it. It is a blade also at full aperture and at all focal lengths, with a slight drop perceptible at the extremes of the range, a sign that the technicians have well optimized it by centering the performance. Fast and quiet focusing and stabilization. Very effective. It is rare to miss a photo, even in very difficult situations. With still subjects I was able to get perfectly sharp images up to 1/3 of a second freehand. I do not exclude being able to go beyond the shorter focal length. Very low distortion that probably goes to zero in the intermediate focal lengths. Unperceived vignetting, natural colors, legible shadows. Precise, solid construction, even with a plastic barrel, in metal would have been really unlikely. For amateur use, once you find the place in the backpack by removing on average 2 optics, it does not regret the performance of any of the many fixed focal lengths I tried, from Nikkor AFD 14 / 2.8 onwards, indeed, it outclasses them all. All those of the old generation at least. Obviously not for the qualities of compactness, which now take on an almost nostalgic meaning. Modern technology, which clearly makes the difference. In conclusion, it is an infallible perspective, with very high absolute performance and a paradoxical quality / price ratio, especially if taken used. Many are migrating to mirrorless, take advantage of it. sent on March 03, 2023 |
