Reviews of cameras, lenses, tripods, heads and other accessories written by Robinik

nikon_d700Nikon D700

Pros: Files that convey a more organic and less digital feel than modern sensors.

Cons: In general, the defects are due to the age of the design, such as the single old generation compact flash memory card.

Opinion: I wanted to add my opinion, about this old reflex, which I still own, to say that actually the files it churns out have the ability to create the Whaoo effect in those who look at them, even today! In fact..... I don't know why, the photos taken with the D700, have a magic that unfortunately those of modern sensors do not have, this led me to think that the much sought-after sharpness, if on the one hand it can be useful, brings with it the other side of the coin, because it makes the images much more "digital" and less pleasant to observe. There is no going back, evolution (but also marketing) has led us to have these very dense sensors, and they are welcome, but I am convinced that an old sensor like that of the D700, combined with a modern processor and therefore with performance in step with the times, would still give a lot of satisfaction. Last thing, it is said that the limit of 12 mp lies in the fact that they do not allow you to crop the image and not to be able to make large prints, well I am a serial cropper, and I have printed 50x70 photos from heavily cropped files that are spectacular, so the 12 mp of the D700, for me, does not suppose any limit. Here.... That's it.... It's not a review, because reviewing such an outdated camera doesn't make sense.... let's say it's an homage to the D700.

fujifilm_xf33_f1-4wrFujifilm XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR

Pros: Build quality, optical performance.

Cons: I would say none...... It does perfectly what it was designed to do.

Opinion: I've read the above considerations, and when I read "prone to microblur" it makes me smile.... The lens is perfect, there is no lens, or camera, that is prone to microblur, and this one I would say least of all, there are only photographers who do not know how to use their tools, and this lens in particular then has a value, at least for me....... since I bought it, it has completely transformed my old XT2, which I had put up for sale, and which I withdrew from sale after trying it with this 33mm. In fact, now it looks like a different camera to me, and I haven't made a mistake in focus! So, anything but microblurred!! I've never had photos as sharp and perfectly focused as they are now! I don't see any defects, I also wonder what the aperture lock on every single diaphragm is for..... Mah...... I would say that if you really have to make an effort to find a flaw in it, it could be that if they made it slightly more compact it would have been the top, but even so, I would say that it handles well. I've never had the old 35mm, so I can't make comparisons, I've only read about this famous magic that the latter has, but I think that a greater sharpness is to be preferred, also because what is there, if you want you can remove it in post with two clicks and get all the magic you want, while what is not there......... It's very hard to add it after that! Ultimately.... Great lens!

fujifilm_xt5Fujifilm X-T5

Pros: Attractive aesthetics, mechanical rings that make it pleasant and very practical to use, stabilized sensor ........ and I would also add dual SD slots.

Cons: It lacks battery gripp, viewfinder resolution not up to the competition, too many megapixels for an apsc.

Opinion: I tried it but it did not convince me, to be a camera body dedicated exclusively to those who mainly do photography, it does not seem very smart to equip it with a viewfinder with less resolution than the sisters of the H series ...... As far as I know, the viewfinder is for photographing. Same thing for the lack of possibility of being able to mount a battery grip, I personally do not use it, but in my house it is a useful accessory for those who photograph, not for those who play monopolies. But the thing that made me desist were the 40megapixels, definitely useless for normal photographic use, and on the practical side I did not notice any difference in quality compared to my XT2, indeed ......... I would say that I like more files than XT2, and moreover files so heavy create me more difficulty than real benefit. I would have bought it for the stabilizer on the sensor, neglecting the fact of the viewfinder and battery grip, but unfortunately I saw that for me the resolution is excessive and on the practical side brings me more disadvantages than advantages. Too bad!

sigma_105macro_osSigma 105mm f/2.8 Macro DG OS HSM

Pros: Price

Cons: Worth what it costs

Opinion: I have owned it for too little time to make a real review, I found it used in a friend's photography shop and it practically cost me 150 euros so I took it home. It is not a lens that excites me, even if real defects for the moment there is no I found them, since complaining about the autofocus of a macro lens, since in macro the autofocus is not used, seems trivial to me. The sharpness as far as I'm concerned is not a problem, modern lenses are all very sharp, maybe even too much, so much so that sometimes it almost disturbs so much sharpness ..... but looking at the photos there is something missing in this perspective, I have not yet understood what, but for the moment I do not feel satisfied with the yield .... I'll have to try it better.

nikon_d3Nikon D3

Pros: Current value for money.

Cons: It depends on your needs, if you do not need to have a billion pixels, none except weight and size.

Opinion: It is a dated camera body, so difficult to find with a few shots, but if you are lucky enough to find one, and if you have not been infected by the fever of high resolution, it is the perfect machine to work, in fact 12 megapixels are the perfect resolution to have quality files and little load on the computer, with the no small advantage of streamlining the entire post-production and storage process of photos. It is possible to obtain prints of the highest quality and large, even cropping, if you do not make mistakes during shooting, and the images have a much more natural and pleasant appearance, compared to those obtained with modern sensors, which being too sharp, almost always have an unreal and I would say surgical look, which in some cases can be fine, but in many others it is not, for example when photographing people. Let's say that in a world where everyone is launching headlong into the new mirrorless systems, dazzled by the promises of marketing, to have less weight and greater quality, these machines represent a solid alternative for those who do not have the opportunity to faint to chase the latest news on the market, but who wish to have professional equipment. I think I was one of the first to switch from the SLR system to the mirrorless system, now many years ago, I can say that the only gain in weight and bulk is obtained with the micro 4/3 and apsc systems and not with the FF systems. because if on the one hand the camera bodies are slightly smaller and lighter, on the other the FF lenses are even more bulky and heavy than those SLRs we were used to. As for the optical quality instead, it is true that the new lenses dedicated to mirrorless FF are on paper of superior quality, but most of the improvements are at the software level and not optical, and in any case distinguishable only by those who, obsessed with these parameters, spend hours in front of the monitor looking at magnifications at 400 percent of the photos taken from the window of their own home to the neighbor's dog. Joking aside, unless you have a passion for photographing birds, and you need to make strong crops, since filling the frame with a goldfinch is not easy, I would say that 12megapixels are more than enough for all other uses, and this camera can still have its say great!
