canon_ftbCanon FTb

Pros: Robustness, ease of use, easy handling, part of a great system of high quality optics.

Cons: None.

Opinion: It was part of a great and long analog journey, which began with a Canonflex RM, passed through an FT QL and then continued with the legendary F1 and then with the advent of electronics with the Canon EF, the AE1 and finally with the A1. I must say that, apart from F1, the FTb remains in the heart for its humility, its simplicity. The clamping collar optical mount was a brilliant prerogative, but the sturdiness and practicality were also admired. Remarkable optics and affordable price have made his fortune and the joy of many young photographers. It was perhaps not comparable with the Nikkormat, but at that time the dispute ignited the minds only of the magazines (I remember an article that belittled the FTb because it was guilty of needing two hands to change the optics: which is absolutely not true). Well, for sure many of my best analog photos were taken with this camera, because the joy of photographing with it aligned the heart and the eye with simplicity.

canon_f1Canon F-1

Pros: Very elegant line, absolute robustness, endless optics of great quality, precision and ease of use.

Cons: After ten years of use, the Teflon wheel of the feed lever was 'slightly' worn...

Opinion: An extremely elegant, very robust camera, of great technological depth, on the other hand it was the antagonist of the Nikon F2 with which it shared a plateau of very large optics. Carried around for several years throughout Italy, in the snow, under the August sun, in winter deluges and tossed around in trekking backpacks. After all these adventures, at the control, the timing was almost perfect, never had a problem with the optics. Often used with the engine (in those days it was an experience to tell the grandchildren), the mechanics could tell of all the photos taken but I think that now it would be able to take the roads again with me and start over. For now, it is enthroned in a display case in my living room, like a beautiful work of art.

nikon_af55_microNikon 55mm f/2.8 AF Micro

Pros: Quality, easy handling, frightening sharpness, can also be used as normal optics.

Cons: Slowness in focusing, but almost insignificant in macro.

Opinion: I've had several analog macro lenses, Canon, Minolta, Nikon, Olympus, and all of them had excellent qualities even on a professional level, used for playback on stands, for dialogy duplication, for scientific research, for personal pleasure, going around. With digital you increase versatility, for this reason, the Micro Nikkor rises to remarkable heights, with its quality. Tested on an APS-C it does not give the impression of excessive drops in quality, but on full frame it flies very high, explains its fantastic resolution and literally 'splits hairs'. Compared to the Micro Nikkor F 3.5 it seems a little less 'raw', but perhaps it is an impression given by the handling of the prints of the past. The sharpness is fantastic, in comparison, to the Sigma Macro 105mm. it's best used for daily macros, but when you're serious in the studio, the Nikkor flexes its muscles. If you want to be amazed by a butterfly...

nikon_d850Nikon D850

Pros: Excellent technology, incredible sensor quality, easy handling, in short... all.

Cons: I can't find any weaknesses. (Maybe video autofocus?)

Opinion: I've spent my life at Canon (analog) and Nikon (digital), owning almost a hundred cameras. I believe that with this D850 we have reached a very high technical level, beyond which we begin to see the boundaries of AI, but here we would also begin to talk about aesthetic composition and 'interpretative technique'. Ease of manoeuvring and feeling of great professionalism also help to understand the meaning of this camera, created for professionals but also to enhance those who want sensations of wonder in photography. The resolution is amazing, a hair below medium format, with a tonal sensitivity of superfine tastes. You need higher quality lenses, but even with the old AF-Ds you can get very remarkable results. However, you have to raise the bar a lot, with 140 Mb TIFF files you need powerful computers and capable harddisks. Night photos that give meaning to the word 'magic'.
