Pros: Once of the sharpest lens ever tested

Cons: Short macro focal length

Opinion: It is even better than Zeiss Milvus 50mm and Planar 50mm, and equal to Sigma 50mArt.It is remarkably detail and sharp even corner.I used many 50mm such as Leica-R 50mm Summicron, Contax Planar 50mm, Nikon 50mm G, Canon 50mm STM, but this is Top of all these lenses. I used Fuji 35mm and Panasonic Leica 25mm, and Pentax sharpest 35mm AL. But none of them come close except Sigma Art 50mm.

Pros: Quality, easy handling, frightening sharpness, can also be used as normal optics.

Cons: Slowness in focusing, but almost insignificant in macro.

Opinion: I've had several analog macro lenses, Canon, Minolta, Nikon, Olympus, and all of them had excellent qualities even on a professional level, used for playback on stands, for dialogy duplication, for scientific research, for personal pleasure, going around. With digital you increase versatility, for this reason, the Micro Nikkor rises to remarkable heights, with its quality. Tested on an APS-C it does not give the impression of excessive drops in quality, but on full frame it flies very high, explains its fantastic resolution and literally 'splits hairs'. Compared to the Micro Nikkor F 3.5 it seems a little less 'raw', but perhaps it is an impression given by the handling of the prints of the past. The sharpness is fantastic, in comparison, to the Sigma Macro 105mm. it's best used for daily macros, but when you're serious in the studio, the Nikkor flexes its muscles. If you want to be amazed by a butterfly...

Pros: Lightness, optical yield, versatility, contrast and center-angle uniformity

Cons: Fragile plastic frame, AF sometimes critical

Opinion: Bought on impulse a couple of years ago based on the excellent results obtained with the manual version of the seventies. The design is curious and a little out of the Nikon tradition, evidently it must have convinced little of its creators since it remained in production for a couple of years between 1987 and 1989. The specimen in my possession has a crack in the ring that allows the transition from MF to AF, fortunately this does not affect functionality. Just like his manual "uncle" of 1977, the 55 is an optics that can be used both to go around doing some reportage as to do macros and shoot close subjects. Sometimes it has uncertainties of focus when the distance is very small, a defect that is attenuated by switching from the D600 to the D3x (the latter has the advantage of being able to open and close the diaphragm to control the depth of field in Live View, but it is another story and still a nice advantage ...). In essence, a multi-purpose lens in the best Nikon tradition.

Pros: Sharp even at full opening and homogeneous up to the edges of f4, wonderful mechanical construction, sublime overall optical rendering with excellent blur and gradual tonal passages, af precise, construction that shields the front lens as there was a light lampshade, light, Compact.

Cons: Af a little slow (for static macros and portrait goes BENISSIMO). They haven't done it (since 1987)... Sigh.

Opinion: What a beautiful lens! Too bad they haven't done it since 1987. I was lucky enough to find a virtually perfect specimen, without oil on the diaphragm, without dust, mold, scratches, well centered and with perfect maf without having to micro-adjust. In my opinion as a focal is more versatile than the 60mm af-d macro. I recommend it unreservedly if you find a copy in good condition.
