Reviews of cameras, lenses, tripods, heads and other accessories written by Marcello del Vecchio

Microsoft Translator  The following opinions have been automatically translated with Microsoft Translator.

panasonic_s5 Panasonic S5

Pros: Stabilization, Articulated Monitor, Dynamic Range, High Iso Seal, quality and malleability of the product file, Tropicalization, Simple and intuitive menu, robustness, fantastic grip, price.

Cons: Viewfinder can be improved, weight, expensive LMount lenses, Autofocus tracking, energy-intensive.

Opinion: Taken on offer with two lenses at an absolutely competitive price. It is worth a lot and absolutely deserves the purchase compared to what it costs. It should preferably be combined with native S series f1.8 lenses (18-24-35-50-85) with which it communicates and works very well. The strengths and weaknesses are those listed, with merits far superior to the defects. It must be a conscious purchase, in the sense that you have to understand exactly what photographic genres you frequent and then adjust your choice. In general, it is an excellent camera for portraits, close up, street, panoramas, macro, still life, minimal, generalist photography, travel reportage. The tracking focus limps for birdlife and sports photography, genres that I do not practice at all and therefore did not affect my choice. The single autofocus is efficient and in the continuous one I have not encountered the bumping that others complain about. It churns out soft, malleable Raw files, workable in pp in an excellent way as they are neither rigid nor plastered. It allows for truly remarkable recoveries in the shadows and changes in the range. The menu is child-proof, in the sense that it is simple and intuitive. I set it up in a half afternoon collecting info on the net and without resorting to the manual. In the hand you have a sense of robustness with excellent ergonomics. I found it a bit energy-intensive, the battery drops after intensive use of a morning, nothing that cannot be remedied with a spare battery. It's a bit heavy, like all Panasonics but everything is balanced by the featherweight of the lenses I listed above. Those who buy it as a second body or to enter the world of FF at the price at which it is NUOVA are making a bargain.

panasonic_leica9_f1-7 Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 9mm f/1.7 ASPH

Pros: Lightness and considerable angle of view (provided you know how to handle it with skill)

Cons: Flare and ghost galore

Opinion: I took it out of desire to add a wide lens to my lens park of an OM1markii and experiment with a wide angle of view that is unusual for me. I took him on various panoramic excursions (lake, mountain, sea, architecture of interior churches, above all). So I write after intensive use in the field in various situations during the day and in the evening. There are certainly merits such as lightness while being plasticky to the touch, the typical brightness of the optics, the 1.7 aperture is excellent especially for indoors. Very responsive and performing autofocus on my camera, the price is certainly another advantage for such bright optics. However..... guys... but.... Resign yourself to losing a lot of shots. This lens returns flare galore on every occasion and circumstance, often you have to give up the subject because there is a way to shoot it without flare and ghost. It becomes a lottery and often like raffles you only get lost. In the end I rejected it and got rid of it. And honestly, don't tell me that it's normal for such a wide lens because it's not true at all to such an exaggerated extent. In love with the width I even went down as a focal length by switching to a zuiko 7/14 pro and honestly it is another category of lens that is now used and taken home at very low costs. With the 7/14 flare and ghost very little and the inevitable minimum, I never missed a single photo output. In the end I personally do not recommend this panasonic.

panasonic_s50f_1-8 Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8

Pros: Cost, compactness, f1.8 aperture, tropicalization, construction solidity, color rendering, soft bokeh, low weight.

Cons: At the moment nothing.

Opinion: Classic kit lens, but... with a final surprise. It may seem like the typical lens that they put in the kit to make you take some photos with the camera as soon as you leave the store, a lens to change as soon as you make some money after the purchase of the camera... But no! This is a really surprising lens if you like the focal length, a lens that you will not easily give up wondering how you can have such a lens in your hands at such a competitive price. Solid, generous aperture at 1.8 which already at maximum aperture is a blade on portraits, vignette very little, sharp from edge to edge, faithful colors, soft and progressive blur, tropicalized, reactive. I use it in combination with the S5 and as an autofocus it is highly performing, a perfect match. Great for portraits, still life, urban views, street, close up. It will become your companion for targeted and selected photographic outings avoiding carrying around a plethora of lenses to change. There is no entry level 50ino from other brands that can compete with this. We are on a quality/price ratio that is to the advantage of the user. Highly recommended.
