olympus_em5_iiOlympus OM-D E-M5 II

Pros: Aesthetics, stabilization, sensor sharpness, dimensions, customization keys, innovative functions, construction, adjustable flash

Cons: High ISO noise, battery life

Opinion: The first one was stolen from me and so I bought it back. Of incomparable beauty, despite owning other FF and APS-C machines of great performance, my Oly I always rediscover it for how it allows you to take great photos. Very valid as a machine to carry around, I use it now with the Panasonic 14-140, all-rounder lens of excellent quality and, despite having used it with the 12-40 that allows you to take photos of the highest level, but that unfortunately they stole me with the first example of EM5 II that I had, I must say that even with the Panasonic I get excellent results. The Live Mos sensor behaves very well, beautiful colors but still natural, so valid in portraits, sharpness that with good lenses reaches excellent levels, and the 16 mp are enough and advance. Photographing a lot in the evening, I certainly noticed more noise than I do with Fuji or nikon FF, but this problem can be overcome very well by learning to use it correctly. In fact, it should not be used as an FF or an APS-C, closing the diaphragm to have depth of field. Thanks to the m4/3 sensor, you can photograph very well with open apertures and still get a minimum of depth of field, so in the evening it is good and it is possible not to exceed 1600 ISO, sensitivity that allows you to control the noise very well and have really impressive sharpness and cleanliness of the image! Especially since if you photograph still objects or you want to highlight the movement, thanks to a fantastic stabilizer you can raise the shutter speeds freehand up to 1/5 of a second, and with a stabilized lens even up to half a second, obtaining really great results. In this respect it is an unbeatable machine, probably only the EM1 and the latest born OM1 do better. I will never deprive myself of it. However, I recommend using it with the additional grip, otherwise to hold it is not particularly comfortable, especially if you use it for a long time. And then, better to have a couple of spare batteries. Another tip is to avoid exaggerating in PP with sharpness, which is already excellent, a bit like in Fuji, otherwise you risk the cartoon effect. And then, although jpgs are great, it is good to post-produce in Lightroom because Workspace, Olympus' program, works worse in noise reduction. Although, as I have already written, if you work up to 1600 ISO the noise is almost non-existent and there is no need to reduce it, so as not to affect the excellent sharpness. One last big plus: the flash. It is not incorporated, it must be mounted if necessary. And it is a gem because not only does it work very well, even if not very powerful, but it is above all adjustable both laterally and upwards, something that is not possible to do either with the flashes on the classic APS-C, or on the Fuji X series. This is why it is my favorite in evening events where you do not need a particularly powerful flash, allowing you to take photos with excellent lightening flashes.
