![]() | Canon EF 400mm f/5.6 L USM Pros: Weight, sharpness even at TA, price, integrated hood, dimensions Cons: Maybe short bracket for freehand grip Opinion: Goal held 3 years. Transportable anywhere given the size, excellent sharpness. Used first on 70d and then on 5d4. Taken after literally "defenestrated" a 150-600 I fell in love with it. In comparison it lacks 200mm but the quality of the file is on another planet, also allowing me to make important crops. I photographed everything: small reptiles, small birds, large birds of prey, large mammals. The absence of the stabilizer is absolutely irrelevant: on the fly they are fast times, on purpose I shot up to 1/10s (of course, with a good tripod and a level head). With a 400 f2.8, IS disabled, given the heaviness, I do not think it is possible (and this is proof of the versatility due to the weight of this lens). Often used also multiplied 1.4x III on 5d4: AF slightly slow, but in the norm with closure to f8. nothing particularly unusable. Without multiplier the AF is valid even if on large excursions it needs manual help (and here comes into play the full time MF absolutely useful in some cases). For what it costs the lack of tropicalization is a more than acceptable compromise, to be circumvented with some flutter (plastic bag or lens cover -Amazon 10 €). Used for the purpose for which it was born and in its price range it simply has no rivals. It's a regret to deprive myself of it but having upgraded to 500 f4 it is necessary. sent on August 02, 2021 |
![]() | Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD Pros: Focal range, stabilizer, AF speed Cons: Weight, F/b Focus, sharpness, exaggerated lens hood, raw file detail, no tropicalization Opinion: Bought used on the forum, impeccable conditions, I thought it was a good compromise as first tele. Right from the start he suffered from F/b focus which, despite the fine adjustment made over and over again, I never solved. The raw was matted by a mist "fog effect" that with a thread of non-optimal light forced me to trashing the file. Even at ISO (out of 70d) over 800 i traked the shots. I tried all of them: stabilizer on/off, shutter mode, fine adjustment AF, Acquasanta (jokes) but nothing. On other camera bodies other than mine was distinctly superior. Ah.. And it opened at F/4 to 150 and to f/5.6 to 600 (instead of 5.6-6.3)... Strange thing. Only on my camera body. I deduced after a thousand reasonings and opinions that the specific objective and that specific machine were incompatible. It is not common but with compatible it might happen. From the same user I purchased a 400 f/5.6, and I sold this. It changed my life! sent on December 17, 2018 |
