samyang_12_f2ncsSamyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS

Pros: sharpness, cost, build quality, size

Cons: embarrassing flare, not excellent colors, distortion, inaccurate focus ring

Opinion: I went on this lens mainly to have a cheap wide angle to use on sporadic occasions with my xt2: some photos of architecture when the equivalent 35 is not enough and startrail and milky way. the dimensions are compact and the build quality good to be an economical lens (plastic hood). On an optical level the only thing that is saved is sharpness, the rest is embarrassing: the flares are obscene and the colors in difficult light conditions are censorship. The distortion is evident and in architecture it is almost unusable if you want to achieve sufficient results. For this purpose the only way is to keep the sensor perfectly straight because even a slight inclination is difficult to recover. I keep it only because I don't want to spend triple or quadruple for a focal length that I rarely use. Nothing to say for night photos even if the defects above remain if you create compositions by inserting architectural elements.

Pros: Cost, ease of use, light weight, infinite battery, discrete quality, installable Magic Lantern

Cons: No WIFI/Bluetooth connectivity, looks like a toy, few functions, ISO selectable only for unitary stop, bad noise access to battery and SD card inconvenient, poorly defined display

Opinion: I don't dwell on flaws because they are an entry level. I bought it in 2011 in kit with the 18-55 Mark II IS. He accompanied me on every continent and never left me. It allowed me to "learn" to photograph and especially to experiment: long exposures, startrail, timelapse, Hyperlapse. I think that for what it does the cost is right, also given the simplicity of the menus is practically exploitable in full from the first exits. In spite of a single ring nut combining the keys you are able to vary the three shooting parameters without removing the eye from the viewfinder. Coupled with better optics is able to give good shots, sharp and with pleasant colors. The files are quite workable, obviously you can not do miracles, but as already said we are talking about an entry level machine. It has a 12MP APS-C sensor, which allows you to go about at 800 ISO in addition to which the noise becomes too obvious and ugly and goes to invalidate the sharpness. Despite being switched to more powerful camera bodies I decided to keep it as a second camera body to use for timelapse and a day to teach photography to my son. I think this density is perfect for beginners as it returns small RAW and easily exploitable for social or internet (I do not think that those who want to make prints buy a machine like that). If you find a used at a good price buy it, except for the lack of connectivity with smartphones, has all the cards to compete with the latest Canon models of the same band.
