manfrotto_701hdvManfrotto 701HDV

Pros: Robustness, fluidity cartridges unaltered after years. In a word, a guarantee of reliability over time

Cons: I do not know, perhaps the lightness of a part (the plastic cap that covers the central screw) subject to detaching and getting lost

Opinion: I have been using it for 13 years now (June 2009) in combination with 77/82mm diameter spottingscopes and it has never disappointed me, being able to say it after MANY hours spent in the field in all conditions. The movements are still very fluid: the fixed counterbalance of 1.5kg is very good for use with a spottingscope. To make a long story short: I tried and still own a Gitzo GHF2W (beautiful, perfectly fluid but, while tightening them, the two knobs do not completely block the pan/tilt movements), a Velbon FHD-71Q (traditional two-way fluid head, solid but a little too rigid, perhaps ideal for those who use heavy cameras) and so for one reason or another I returned to reassemble this old 701HDV. A great Manfrotto product that perhaps commercially did not find the fame it deserved and of which we have heard a little little, also obscured by the subsequent arrival of the MVH500AH.

sirui_t2204xlSirui T-2204XL

Pros: Light the right, excellent stability, construction quality and level finishes, well equipped

Cons: Frankly for what he gives, I can't find any. To check the tightness and durability of the parts most subject to wear over the years

Opinion: I would like to start by writing that I currently use it for a very light spottingscope, but at 40x and column extracted already at a certain height it handles vibrations well. Well-researched and even better made carbon tripod, complete with all the most important features (for me, the extension of the legs outside, beyond the normal opening angle) and the requirements that market trends over the last ten years require: Arca Swiss plate and bubble - on the head of the E 20 series excellent too - , hook at the base of the column, completely removable column for macro and clearly reversible (also useful to hold in 46 cm the tripod closed for transport in the bag), bivalent screw 1/4 and 3/8, foam sleeves on two of the three legs, additional column element to reach additional heights, accessories supplied. With his head he gets to only 1270 g in weight, really little and is stored in a 30 liter backpack if you do without his carrying bag. Fast and safe the mechanism of lock-unlocking of the legs, which is enough very little round to free and tighten. In short, for a tripod it has everything and is excellently finished. Good Sirui, I imagine the level of category tripods and higher cost... but they're already fine when it came to large tripods

sirui_vh10Sirui VH-10

Pros: Remarkable construction quality and level of finishes, load capacity up to 6 kg

Cons: Incompatible Arca-Swiss plates (they are on the VX-5 model). Maybe the panoramic movement is a less fluid thread than I might wish for, but for the weights it has to put up with it's right

Opinion: I have been owning this head for almost a year with which I solved the management of large loads (angled binoculars of 4.3 kg). Excellent workmanship and construction quality, I must say that Sirui remains at high levels even with cost products, so to speak, affordable, having for a time found new even on 130 €. Fixed counterbalance at 2 kg. I equipped it with a slightly longer plate than the standard one. I am pleased with the service to which I submit it. Quite rich accessory equipment. Rating: 9.

genesis_bh40Genesis BH-40

Pros: High solidity at very low cost, very good tightening

Cons: Poorly resisted painting

Opinion: I took the BH-40 based on the great reviews that appeared. Actually the head performs its work well, I offend a remarkable stability (although I have limited experience with ballheads) at a really low price, almost surprising. However, I used it little and for small loads: I lament only, precisely for this reason, the poor duration of the painting that began to squander almost immediately, but this could depend on a defect of the specimen in my possession.

nikon_ai50_f1-8Nikon Ai 50mm f/1.8

Pros: Super, blurry sharpness

Cons: No

Opinion: This lens is, in a word, a jewel. I own the pancake produced for the Japanese market in the early 1980s, entirely made of metal, minimum focus distance of 45 cm, the one to which Ken Rockwell refers in his review of Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AI S. Very well realized, it works excellently from short distances to infinity, if you start to close by a stop from the maximum opening. Purple fringing almost imperceptible compared to other AI S coevi targets; the lens has a splendid rendering on the colors and free from distortions. Excellent performance at the edges as well.

nikon_80-200_f4aisNikon 80-200mm f/4 AI-s

Pros: Excellent optical performance throughout the excursion, build quality.

Cons: Presence of purple fringing at 200mm at the edges in objectively difficult situations of strong contrasts (branches and leaves against clear and bright skies).

Opinion: Driven by positive opinions and looking for a high-quality zoom however more manageable than the already excellent, but longer and heavier, AI S 100-300 f/5.6, I found one used at 50 degrees (dated to 1982-83) that is satisfying me a lot for its versatility and optical quality (nothing new nor original from this point of view). Used for portraits, it is an excellent lens that, as already rightly highlighted in a previous review, does not forgive uncertainties or imperfections in focus (I use it on a Sony Alpha 7), a point that certainly can not be attributed to the quality of the goal... I usually use it at intermediate openings, especially at f/8 and despite the limitations imposed by the adapter rings, so far I can use it profitably in good available light conditions. Yield excels, I think, especially at short and medium distances. The level of construction quality is truly remarkable; it's a pleasure to carry it (from a certain point of view... on the other hand the almost 900 grams of weight in some cases, at the end of the day, feel...) and use it precisely for this reassuring - and entirely deserved - sense of robustness and reliability.

sony_a7Sony A7

Pros: Flexibility and ideal solution for those who use vintage optics. Great FF 24Mp sensor, overall build quality, focus peaking.

Cons: Mainly the monstrously short life of the batteries. Plastic-metal attack, sensor that I find easy to get dirty. Other minors, or more subjective: gripist not perfect for the small size of the body (but on the other point of view this is an element in favor!), ergonomics with wheel controls/buttons partly not very intuitive, like the menu, at least for me. Noisy shutter button.

Opinion: Taken at the end of 2017 with a nice occasion in the used, she donated a second youth to the vintage kits of the house, mainly Canon FD and Pentax A and F extended lately to Nikon, probably for the renewed pleasure of making photography that gave me back in time recent A7. I started about forty years ago with MF lenses, so the fact that I can't use AF is not unwelcome to me, so I'm fond of this fullframe mirrorless. Today, however, I would opt for an A7II because of the stabilizer but at the time I was not aware of the various improvements in the mark II model. However for the few shots per year I also do the basic model i'm fine with. Stabilization is a plus that could obviously be useful to me; there is to say that in macro I often use the flash and bring tripods, of which I have many choices, does not give me too much boredom. And then I prefer to invest in more or less dated, but quality goals (also because Sony optics would be and are frankly unapproachable for their costs!). The Sony 24 Mp sensor churns out JPG vouchers with beautiful color yields and even better RAW files, but it seems to me that it gets dirty easily. Up to 3200 ISO is still usable, from 4000 the noise begins to appear noticeable. In the absence of Sony autofocus lenses, focus peaking is a great help for images where accuracy in focus is more critical and generally for those with vision problems. The electronic viewfinder satisfies me. A little difficult to find Sony compatible accessories in the used, but looking you succeed. I do not like the fast discharge of the battery, already highlighted by many: something so extreme had never happened to me! And Sony could also add an external charger to the packaging without going bust. Rating: 8.5

nikon_60d_microNikon AF 60mm f/2.8 D Micro

Pros: Very high clarity, colors, build quality

Cons: No one would say

Opinion: Found in conditions equal to the new one in the used, an end-of-series specimen (2006/7). I have never had such a high-performance 50mm macro, higher than the already very good SMC F Pentax 50mm f/2.8 macro. I join those who preceded me emphasizing the amazing sharpness, the vivid colors, the very good surrender even at not close distances. The quality of construction, which makes it a professional objective (often abused term), is also excellent. I took it recently to match it to the 105mm f/2.8 micro that I use with full satisfaction for insects, while the 60mm I see it better for flora. Using this and the other optics, macro and not, in manual on a Sony Alpha 7 using adapters, I could not even find the relative slowness of the autofocus highlighted by others (but in macro anyway it is a relative limitation for me)

nikon_20_f3-5aisNikon 20mm f/3.5 Ai-S

Pros: Excellent optical and mechanical quality, good flare containment, weight and small size, diameter filters 52

Cons: Indefinitely it does not offer maximum yield, sensitive curvature of the field with presence of purple fringing at the edges

Opinion: Having never owned a 20mm, comforted by the various positive reviews, a few weeks ago I ended up finding an AI in very good condition thus completing a set of AI and AF D targets. I pair it with an adapter ring to a Sony Alpha 7 / 7II. I am very satisfied with its use in landscapes based on what Has been tried so far. I agree in particular with the considerations of the first two reviews. I usually use it from F/8 to F/11; it returns an excellent degree of sharpness, resisting well the internal reflections and in general provides warm shades that sometimes remind me a bit of the old Kodachrome. I also appreciate the small size and the diameter of the 52mm filters

nikon_af28-105dNikon AF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 D

Pros: General quality, great macro function

Cons: I honestly struggle to find any...

Opinion: I was looking for a zoom all-rounder and, after documenting and collecting opinions and tests, I found and then took to Japan (used at 95 euros with shipping included) this Nikkor AF 28-105mm f/3,5-4.5 D; pair it with a Sony Alpha 7 using an adapter ring. Although I have never particularly loved zoom lenses, this is a remarkable opticthat has blown me away. Excellent sharpness, practically throughout the excursion, very low chromatic aberration, distortion or absent or limited to 28mm. The 1:2 macro feature is another really remarkable bonus for the quality that can be obtained from such a lens. Amazing what they have managed to do and to bring together in one goal.
