olympus_e510Olympus E-510

Pros: Lightness, ease of use, image stabilizer, image sharpness.

Cons: Image rendering over 400 ISO (in JPG), slow continuous autofocus, few autofocus points (3), image colors on the display different from reality (very faded), fixed display, rudimentary live view autofocus, lack of the front dial for fast time/aperture settings, ISO only up to 1600 and steps of only 1 stop.

Opinion: The E-510 was my first SLR. I chose it mainly for the image stabilizer, which I had on the FZ50, and that being mounted on the image sensor I could use it with all lenses. The camera is lightweight and I found it convenient for settings, but I missed the front dial on the handle (present instead in the FZ50). I found the image quality up to 400 ISO very good, especially in the sharpness of the subject in focus, despite the 14-42 lens in kit (polycarbonate lenses). The single AF has always been precise, a little less the continuous one, even if it has never shone in speed (even with the sigma 30mm 1.4 with ultrasonic motor). Another small disappointment was the display: the colors are distorted and to realize the true image, you have to see it on the PC. The live view is not great and to focus you have to use the exposure lock button, better to shoot with the optical viewfinder (a bit small). The stabilizer is very good, but that of the FZ50 was superior (in my opinion). I still use it for portraits and landscape photos or when I feel like traveling light.

Pros: Optical quality, Image stabilizer, possibility of shooting in RAW, double ring, adjustable display, viewfinder, transportability, mechanical zoom ring.

Cons: JPEG image quality over ISO 400, low-reactive autofocus with poor light and continuous mode, shutter speed limited to 1/2000s, noise reduction algorithm too aggressive at high ISO.

Opinion: It was my second camera and it was a good school ship. Excellent color rendition and sharpness of the images even in print (I tried up to 50x70 with ISO up to 400 and 15x20 to 800 ISO), excellent image stabilizer as well as optics. Good build quality. I regret its compactness and lightness compared to my current SLR. I got good results also by mounting on the front lens the Olympus tcon 17 teleconverter (used a lot for photo to the moon). The autofocus could be better with low light and continuous mode. Excellent also the zoom ring that being mechanical allowed a precise adjustment of the same. In addition the zoom was completely internal and did not change the size of the lens. Given the small sensor sinned at high sensitivities.
