In Italia, i primi esperimenti di aratura a vapore furono realizzati nel 1872, nell'Agro Romano, per iniziativa del Ministero dell'Agricoltura, Industria e Commercio, che aveva acquistato già da cinque una macchina a trazione funicolare di produzione inglese, che era rimasta inutilizzata a lungo, per mancanza di personale capace di farla funzionare. Seguirono prove con impianti Fowler in provincia di Ferrara, dove fu anche sperimentata una macchina di produzione nazionale: la Selvi-Zangirolami. In seguito, produttori come Casali, Missiroli, Violati-Tescari e Amati-Chiavacci misero a punto apparecchi a trazione funicolare. Ogni tentativo di applicare l'energia del vapore alla trazione diretta dell'aratro o, comunque, al funzionamento di macchine agricole semoventi, risultò vano, perché le locomobili, troppo pesanti, affondavano nel terreno, erano di difficile manovrabilità e risultavano troppo costose. In questo campo, gli Italiani diedero un notevole contributo. L'ing. Pietro Ceresa Costa di Piacenza, osservando la manovra di alcune locomotive stradali del Genio Militare, pensò di utilizzarle per la trazione dell'aratro, attaccato lateralmente alla locomobile, che poteva marciare su terreno sodo. Con alcune perfezionamenti alle ruote suggerite dall'ing. Morosini e servendosi di una locomobile Marshall e Sons di 12 tonnellate con un motore di 8 CV, Ceresa Costa eseguì alcune prove a Roma e a Torino negli anni 1883 e 1884. Nel 1887 si trovavano in esercizio, in Italia, 37 macchine per la motoaratura di questo tipo a fronte di circa 12 macchine a trazione funicolare. Come si può notare, siamo veramente in un'epoca pioneristica, con un numero di macchine del tutto esiguo. Il vero impulso alla diffusione delle macchine di motoaratura a trazione diretta si ebbe solo con l'introduzione e il perfezionamento dei motori a combustione interna, in tutte le sue molteplici varianti per tipo di carburante e per sistemi di funzionamento. Il motore a scoppio era meno pesante di quello a vapore, era dotato di un'autonomia molto maggiore e risultava di facile conduzione da parte di un solo operatore, mentre la locomobile ne richiedeva almeno un paio se non di più. Sembra che il primo trattore (o trattrice) azionato con un motore a scoppio sia stato sperimentato nel 1892 negli Stati Uniti, ma solo fra il 1900 e il 1903 furono immesse sul mercato le prime macchine di motoaratura a trazione diretta di questo tipo. qui nell'immagine vediamo lo svolgimento con due macchine Jhon Fowler del 1917, del peso di circa 20ton durante la sagra di Trecasali -Parma
