Melanargia galathea (Linné, 1758) - Famiglia Nymphalidae - Sottofamiglia: Satyrinae - Apertura alare: Da 4,4 a 5,7 cm. - Distribuzione in Italia: Presente in tutte le regioni ad eccezione della Sardegna. - Habitat: Prati, ampie radure e cespuglieti dal livello del mare sino a 2000 m. - Periodo di volo: Univoltina da giugno ai primi di agosto. - Pianta alimentare dei bruchi: Varie graminacee tra cui Phleum pratense e i generi Bromus, Dactylis, Poa, Festuca, ecc. - Dimorfismo sessuale: La femmina presenta il disegno del rovescio delle ali posteriori velato di giallo. - Variazioni: In alcune femmine può mancare completamente il disegno del rovescio delle ali posteriori: forma leucomelas. Vi sono popolazioni locali caratterizzate da diversità nell'aspetto sia per dimensioni delle ali che per estensione del disegno nero. Ad esempio in Friuli vi sono razze locali quasi completamente nere (razza elvira forma quasilugens). - Specie simili: Melanargia russiae che presenta una banda scura dentellata che divide in due la cellula discoidale dell'ala anteriore.
