Famiglia: Calopterygidae - Specie: Calopteryx virgo - Autore: (Linnaeus, 1758) - Dimensioni: lunghezza 45-50 mm, apertura alare 48-72 mm. Descrizione: il maschio è di colore blu con riflessi metallici verdi. Gli ultimi segmenti addominali, ventralmente, sono rosa chiaro. Si distingue dai maschi congeneri per le ali più larghe, arrotondate e quasi completamente blu-violacee. La femmina è invece verde-bruno metallizzata con ali marrone chiaro, meno trasparenti rispetto alle femmine di Calopteryx splendens, e pseudopterostigma bianco. Distribuzione e habitat: presente in tutte le regioni italiane con esclusione di Valle d'Aosta, Puglia, Sardegna e Sicilia, in aree boschive, rogge, fontanili, ambienti freschi ed ombreggiati con acque correnti, pulite e ben ossigenate. Dal piano fino ad 800 metri di quota. Periodo di volo: maggio-settembre.
