Crespi è il nome della famiglia di industriali cotonieri lombardi che a fine Ottocento realizzò un moderno "Villaggio ideale del lavoro" accanto al proprio opificio tessile, lungo la riva bergamasca del fiume Adda. Il Villaggio Crespi d'Adda è una vera e propria cittadina completa costruita dal nulla dal padrone della fabbrica per i suoi dipendenti e le loro famiglie. Ai lavoratori venivano messi a disposizione una casa con orto e giardino e tutti i servizi necessari. In questo piccolo mondo perfetto il padrone "regnava" dal suo castello e provvedeva come un padre a tutti i bisogni dei dipendenti: dentro e fuori la fabbrica e "dalla culla alla tomba", anticipando le tutele dello Stato stesso. Nel Villaggio potevano abitare solo coloro che lavoravano nell'opificio, e la vita di tutti i singoli e della comunità intera "ruotava attorno alla fabbrica stessa", ai suoi ritmi e alle sue esigenze.
