Il primo zuccherificio Eridania nasce a Codigoro (1899), dove l'omonima azienda associata si è impegnata a coltivare barbabietole nel proprio latifondo, secondo un piano di rotazione quinquennale dei terreni. Già l'anno successivo (1900) si inaugura uno stabilimento a Forlì, il che ha la conseguenza che, in pochi anni, la barbabietola da zucchero diventi la più importante cultura industriale in Romagna, superando la canapa. La crescita dell'impresa è piuttosto veloce e, allo scoppio della prima guerra mondiale, le unità produttive dell'Eridania sono già nove; una scelta determinata dalla grande disponibilità di spazio coperto che esigeva il processo produttivo del tempo, unito alla carenza di infrastrutture viarie ed alla lentezza dei trasporti. Dopo le gravi difficoltà dovute al conflitto che aveva rallentato fortemente la produzione a causa della caduta di domanda nel mercato e, soprattutto, per la carenza di mano d'opera, l'Eridania riprende l'espansione nei primi anni venti con la costruzione di nuovi impianti, l'ammodernamento degli esistenti e l'acquisizione di alcune aziende saccarifere minori.
