Simien Wolf...

Etiopia: animali

Simien Wolf sent on November 12, 2013 (8:10) by Memy. 24 comments, 1932 views.

A specimen of which did not even know existed. From exhaustive description you know it's a rare catch, however, very well represented, optimum PDR and much blurred.

Thank you very much Pmaffio, and 'a very rare animal which is not difficult to see in constant motion on the plateau of Sannetti in search of the rodents they eat .... Going in the right place there are many possibilities to see it while it is not always easy to bring home discrete shots. A couple of friends of the forum have just come back and have seen them even in the snow!

Great shot. Neither do I know the existence of this animal .....
Congratulations Memy.

Thanks Mark!

The scientific name is Canis simensis and unfortunately, since I 've seen for the first time, a decade ago, I saw his condition gradually become more and more worrisome .......
From the first time when there were only wolves, rats and birds' last in which, in the favorite hunting ground, there were hundreds of head of cattle and many wild animals less!

Superb shot Memy, we do not see many of them around, and especially if they hear a little talk. Thanks for sharing it with us.
It 'a shame that this animal there is so little information. Everyone knows that the Sumatran tiger is at serious risk of extinction and the same should also be for the wolf of the simien. A greater knowledge would help the preservation of the species, it could become a destination more widespread among wildlife photographers who travel by organizing ad hoc would help those who are already taking care of this animal raising funds for the purchase of vaccines for rabies or maintain a healthy l 'habitat. It would be a shame to lose this animal and I hope one day to see it.

congratulations for the reportage and the beautiful photos.
I agree with the thought of ivanmazzon.
It would require greater awareness on the part of the media.
if we safeguard nature also safeguard ourselves, we are an integral part of it.

Thank you all!
time ago with a little 'of fans who have come on me had also decided to organize an initiative to raise funds for the project that was languishing just because of lack of funds .. Unfortunately then if they have not done anything, and perhaps it would be appropriate to take up the discussion and try to finalize it ..

For the record, Mark has just returned .. ;-)

Thank you all! :-P:-P
These wolves are wonderful and we really hope they can continue to survive in their beautiful environment ....
Years from maledicevamo the colored labels that had ears but we have learned that pointed to vaccination against rabies, then the money have fallen and are progressively disappeared ... Better photographically but then came the inevitable rabies epidemic that has them halved! :-(
This photo was taken right after that there was the 'epidemic ....
Now the population is recovering and, although I do not like aesthetically and I know that the curse, if you think about it, hope to see those bits of colored plastic in their ears .... :-)

Thank you very much Giuseppe :-)

It 'a wolf small so that it is also commonly called Simien Fox wow!
It feeds on rats (its preferred prey is the giant rattotalpa) and sometimes hares (I happened to attend a hunting) and for this reason it can be seen walking all day in search of his victims ..

Just last night I saw a documentary on this Wolf on a channel on Sky.
It 'an animal in danger of extinction, an estimate shows that there are only a maximum of 500 copies.
The Your photo is a beautiful testimony.
Congratulations

thanks Mark

The estimate is in fact always been about 450/500 specimens but unfortunately I'm afraid that has not been updated after 2/3 years ago there was the 'rabies epidemic that has decimated the population most important of these wolves ...: - (:-(

But Andrew, who had been with me and we just got back, he told me that it seems that, in comparison with 'last time, should be increased so that, despite everything, there are some positive signs ... :-P
