Note: la sottospecie sibyllina (Verity 1913) è endemica italiana; nota nell'Italia centrale, dove vive sui Monti Sibillini, sul Monte Rotondo, sul Gran Sasso e, in Toscana, sulle Alpi Apuane. Caratterizzata spesso da un numero di ocelli in soprannumero rispetto a Erebia neoridas
Maschio: colore bruno scuro. Ali anteriori con ampia fascia postdiscale rossastra che si restringe posteriormente. Due grosse macchie ocellari nere ravvicinate, pupilate di bianco, negli spazi compresi tra le nervature mediane. Una più piccola tra le due cubitali. Macchie simili ma più piccole e contornate di rossastro quasi sempre presenti nelle posteriori.
Femmina: simile al maschio ma con macchie ocellari generalmente più grandi e più numerose.
Rovescio: ali anteriori simili al dritto. Posteriori di colore variabile da grigiastro chiaro ad ocraceo con una fascia discale e una marginale bruna.
Distribuzione: presente nelle Alpi e nell'Appennino centro-settentrionale.
Habitat: frequenta i prati e le pendici del piano basale e montano, da 600 sino a circa 1900 metri s.l.m.
Generazioni annuali: una sola con sfarfallamento in agosto
Piante nutrici: Poa annua, Digitaria sanguinalis, Festuca sp.
